DESCRIPTION

There was a time when writing was a private act. That's why the fall-front secretaire was invented: a piece of furniture that locks and shows nothing to those who pass by.

This secretaire was built in the first half of the 19th century in the Empire style: full columns, chiseled bronzes, and flame mahogany laid in a mirrored pattern. A sober, architectural language that originated in France and still commands respect.

The top is veined black marble. When the front is lowered, the leather writing surface with its original patina appears, along with a niche with turned columns and a battery of interior drawers. The drawers are assembled with hand-cut dovetails on solid oak — the signature of a cabinetmaker, not a factory. It retains its key.

At 97.5 cm wide and 50 cm deep, it fits where a desk cannot: a living room, a bedroom, a prominent hallway. Closed, it is an elegant piece of furniture 144.6 cm high. Open, it's a complete office.

No two are alike. There will be no replenishment.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The flame mahogany of the fall-front, cut and laid in a mirrored pattern: two consecutive veneers from the same trunk opened like a book. This symmetrical design is yielded by each trunk only once — no mass production can replicate it.

→ The marks of use and the patina of the writing surface's leather. Almost two centuries of letters and accounts leave a surface that no workshop can create from scratch.

→ Its double life: closed, it passes as an elegant living room piece; open, it is a desk with everything needed. Work is stored away with the lid and disappears.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

In the workshop, we inspected the entire structure, adjusted the fall-front mechanism and drawer runners, and consolidated joints where time had taken its toll. The wood received anti-woodworm treatment, as well as a cleaning and nourishment that revive the mahogany without erasing its history.

The piece is solid, the drawers slide smoothly, and the fall-front locks with its key. It shows marks of use and age, as befits a genuine piece of its era. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specializing since 2015 in antique furniture, with its own workshop in Navalcarnero and over 3,500 families served throughout Spain.
