DESCRIPTION

The piece of furniture next to the bed is used in the dark. Blindly, with one hand and half asleep.

It's the only piece of furniture in the house that works like that.

These two vintage bedside tables were made in the second half of the 20th century, following the French Louis XV model: a serpentine front body, molded uprights, and cabriole legs ending in a volute. They are a pair and are sold together.

Each drawer front has a molded trim carved into the edge itself, which curls into a volute at both ends. The same design is repeated on all three drawers of each nightstand.

The knobs are made of chiseled brass with an embossed rosette, one per drawer. They retain the dark tone they have acquired over time.

The wear of the black paint is visible on the edges, on the front moldings, and on the edge of the gallery. The warm background of the base shows through underneath. The inside of the drawers was left in exposed wood.

35 cm wide, 34 cm deep, and 71 cm high. Each. The depth is the deciding measurement: at 34 cm, they fit where there is little space between the bed and the wall. The 71 cm height leaves the surface above the mattress on high beds.

On both sides of the bed, or each on its own: next to a reading armchair, in a narrow hallway.

FOUR DEFINING DETAILS

→ Where the wear appears. It is not randomly distributed: edges, front moldings, and the edge of the gallery, which is precisely where the hand passes every night. The warm background of the base appears underneath.

→ The tabletop gallery. It surrounds the surface on three sides with the edge carved in a curve and leaves the front free. What is placed on top doesn't fall to the floor when the bed is moved.

→ The brass knobs. Chiseled rosette in relief, one per drawer. They were cleaned without polishing: their dark tone is original.

→ The sides. Recessed and molded panel also on the side faces, not just on the front. Seen from the side, they are still the same piece of furniture.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

The structure of both pieces was checked, starting with the base of the legs, which, on such a delicate cabriole leg, is the joint that works independently. The six drawers were adjusted to slide smoothly, and the entire molded front and the carved edge of the gallery were hand-sanded, where machine sanding tends to round the profile.

The color is ours, and we state it clearly. Hand-painted black over a warm base, then distressed on edges, moldings, and the edge of the gallery to reveal the background. The inside of the drawers was left in exposed wood, and the knobs were cleaned without polishing them.

All eight legs are perfectly level, the six drawers close flush with the front, and the finish is sealed.

Frequently asked questions

Is it an original piece or a reproduction?

These are two original side tables from the second half of the 20th century, made of solid wood in the French Louis XV style. The moldings on the fronts and the scroll feet are carved from the wood itself, and the chiselled brass knobs are original to the furniture.

What restoration work has been done?

The structure of both pieces was inspected due to the leg attachments, the six drawers were adjusted, and the molded front and gallery edge were hand-sanded. The stripped black finish on a warm base was applied here: this is a workshop finish, not the original. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Where does this piece look best in the home?

On either side of the bed is their natural place: 71 cm high leaves the surface above the mattress on high beds. With a width of 35 cm and a depth of 34 cm, they also fit individually next to a reading armchair or in a narrow hallway.

How is shipping handled for a piece of this size?

Shipping is free throughout the Peninsula. Delivery is carried out by the store's own staff: we place the piece inside the home, where access allows, and remove the packaging. We do not deliver to the curb.
