DESCRIPTION

An antique mirror, gilded with gold leaf, doesn't take up space on a wall. It transforms it.

This piece dates back to the second half of the 19th century, when European workshops mastered the art of wood carving with a precision that no modern factory can replicate. The Rococo frame, with its acanthus volutes and openwork crest, was hand-carved, piece by piece, using chisels and gouges. The gold leaf was applied sheet by sheet over an Armenian bole base, following an ancestral process that remains impossible to automate.

The carved wood embraces the glass with an organic-looking movement: leaves that grow, volutes that curve outwards, a crest that crowns the piece without anything appearing forced. The gilding has the warm, deep hue of aged gold—that amber nuance that time imparts and that modern gilding never achieves.

Measuring 63 cm wide and 97 cm high, it serves as a centerpiece in an entryway or on the main wall of a living room. In a bedroom, above a chest of drawers or console, it takes on a serene presence. Its minimal depth—3 cm—makes it easy to hang without structural constraints.

No two are alike. There will be no restocking.

── WHAT WE LOVE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The gold leaf application: unlike spray or powder gilding, gold leaf requires a prepared surface, temper, and a steady hand. Every square centimeter of this frame was gilded this way. This is noticeable when the light changes.

→ The patina of time: the raised areas show natural wear that softens the shine and adds depth. This isn't an imperfection—it's what differentiates a period piece from any reproduction.

→ The effect on space: Rococo has the ability to give character to a room without the need for additional ornamentation. This mirror does that job alone.

── RESTORED IN OUR NAVALCARNERO, MADRID WORKSHOP ──

In the workshop, the frame's structure was reviewed, consolidating the carved areas with greater accumulated tension. Small detachments of gold leaf were reintegrated with the same material and original technique—without repainting or concealing varnishes. The glass was cleaned and inspected; it retains its original mirror plate.

The mirror arrives in perfect condition for use and display, ready to hang. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración—specializing since 2015 in antique furniture, with its own workshop in Navalcarnero and serving over 3,500 families across Spain.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is it an original mirror or a reproduction?

A: It is an authentic piece from the second half of the 19th century. The frame is hand-carved from solid wood and gilded with gold leaf using the traditional technique — gold leaf over Armenian bole. No industrial workshop today reproduces this process with these results.

Q: What restoration work has been carried out?

A: The frame's structure was consolidated, and small detachments of gold leaf were reintegrated using the same material and original technique. The mirror retains its original glass, which has been cleaned and inspected. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Q: Where does this mirror look best in a home?

A: It works as a focal point in hallways and living rooms, especially over a console table or sideboard. Also in bedrooms over a dresser. Measuring 63 cm wide and 97 cm high, it has presence without appearing disproportionate in standard-sized spaces.

Q: How is shipping managed for a piece like this?

A: Shipping is free throughout the Iberian Peninsula. It includes delivery inside the home and removal of packaging. We manage transportation with companies specializing in valuable items.

Q: What guarantees does Antique Arte y Decoración offer?

A: We have been specializing in the selection and restoration of antique furniture since 2015. More than 3,500 families throughout Spain and a rating of 4.9 out of 5 on Google. You can contact us before purchasing for any questions about the piece.
