What we know about this piece
The Louis Philippe mirror eschews carving: a frame molded with a deep cove and all the decoration on the fillet surrounding the glass. This piece is French, from the second half of the 19th century. It is water-gilded, with gold leaf over red bole, and the clay shows through at every point of wear. The glass is the original, with foxing to the silvering. The stucco fillet has minimal losses that have not been disguised. In the workshop, the structure was inspected and treated against wood-boring insects. The gold was gently cleaned. It was not retouched.
Frequently asked questions
Is it an original antique mirror or a reproduction?
It is an original French piece from the second half of the 19th century. The gilding is water-gilding with gold leaf over red bole, which shows through the wear, and it retains the original mirror glass with the pitting typical of antique silvering: two signs that no reproduction possesses.
What restoration work has been carried out?
The frame structure and backing were checked, the mirror glass seating was verified, and the wood was treated against woodworm. The gilding was gently cleaned, without re-gilding or touching it up. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.
Where does this piece best fit in a home?
Measuring 82 × 100 cm, it works well hung vertically in a hallway, above a chest of drawers or a sideboard, or in a bathroom with period furniture. It also allows for composition with paintings and other mirrors.
Is the pitting on the mirror glass a defect?
No: it is the patina of the original 19th-century silvering, and we have preferred to preserve it. Replacing the mirror glass would detract from the authenticity and value of the piece. If you are looking for a perfect reflection like a new mirror, this is not the right piece, and we prefer to say so.
