DESCRIPTION

There are books you read and books you keep. The latter demand glass in front: in plain sight, dust-free, and under lock and key.

This antique mahogany display cabinet was made in France in the late 19th century, following the Empire style: a straight front, four free-standing columns with gilded bronze capitals and bases, and an entablature with appliqués. It came from a private owner. We chose it for its columns, turned in mahogany, and for the complete set of bronzes.

The body is mahogany veneered; on the lower panels of the three doors, the veneer is flamed, with the grain rising like a flame. The columns feature gilded bronze capitals and bases with palmette friezes. On the entablature, above each column, is a bronze palmette, and between them are three friezes with two winged figures facing a chalice, set amidst scrollwork. The keyhole escutcheons are of openwork bronze, in the shape of an elongated leaf, and each door locks with its own key. Inside, there are two shelves per section, three levels in total, and a back panel made of wooden boards darkened by time.

189 cm wide, 51 cm deep, and 194 cm high. With a depth of 51 cm, it fits into a living room as a main bookcase without obstructing passage, occupies the wall behind the desk in an office, or serves as a china cabinet in a dining room. It weighs 60 kg. It is advisable to measure the wall: you will need a little over 190 cm of clear space.

WHY THIS PIECE AND NOT ANOTHER

→ The four columns. Turned in mahogany, detached from the body, with gilded bronze capitals and bases. These are what give the front its temple-like rhythm.

→ The bronzes. Palmettes above the columns, three friezes with winged figures, and three openwork keyhole escutcheons. The set is complete: they were cleaned in our workshop and retain their original gilding.

→ The flamed veneer. On the lower panels of the three doors, the mahogany grain rises in a flame pattern. It changes with the light throughout the day.

→ The three keys. Each door locks with its own key. The three locks were serviced and are in working order.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, the mahogany was cleaned without the use of stains or dyes, and the bronzes were cleaned one by one. The three locks and their keys were serviced, and the missing wood on the back panel was replaced.

The structure has not been altered: it is as solid as it was when it arrived. It retains slight signs of wear on the shelves and edges. The doors lock securely and the glass panels are set firmly. Ready to be placed in its rightful spot.

What we know about this piece

Napoleon wanted his furniture to look like temples. Percier and Fontaine, his architects, established the formula around 1800: mahogany, columns, and gilt bronze. French workshops continued to follow it throughout the century. This display cabinet dates to the late 19th century, is made of mahogany, and came from a private owner in France. It retains the four columns with their capitals, the three friezes of winged figures, and the three keys. In the workshop, the mahogany was cleaned, the bronzes were polished, and missing parts on the back were replaced. The structure and signs of wear were left as they were.
