DESCRIPTION

Before electricity, a gilded mirror was not decoration. It was light. It multiplied candles, enlarged rooms, and silently announced the status of the house. A vintage gold-leaf mirror still does exactly the same today.

This mirror was carved in the 19th century according to the Neoclassical repertoire of Louis XVI: a crest with a classic gadrooned cup, laurel garlands falling to the sides, fretwork at the corners, and acanthus finials. Each element is hand-carved from wood and gilded with gold leaf — a technique of applying leaf by leaf that no modern factory serially reproduces.

And then there's the glass. It is the original of the period, with its mercury marks: that soft speckling that only appears when a mirror has breathed for more than a hundred years. It is the signature that no new "aged" mirror can imitate, and the most honest proof of authenticity there is.

At 60 cm wide and 104 cm high, it is the perfect size to grace a hall over a console, a fireplace, or a bedroom wall. It weighs only 10 kg, so it hangs without complications.

No two are alike. There will be no restocking.

── WHAT WE LOVE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The crest: a classic cup carved with acanthus leaves and flowers, supported by naturally falling garlands. It is carved with a gouge on wood, not molded paste like in imitation gilded mirrors.

→ The mercury marks on the original glass. Where others would see a defect, those who understand see a certificate: that soft mercury haze is impossible to manufacture today and gives reflections a warmth that modern glass lacks.

→ The gold's patina, dulled where century-old gilding should be dulled and vibrant on the reliefs. New gilding shines; 19th-century gilding illuminates.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

In our workshop, we inspect the structure of the frame and crest, consolidate the carvings and joints, and clean the gilding while fully respecting the gold leaf and original patina. The mercury glass was preserved as it arrived: it is part of the piece's value. The wood was treated against wood-boring insects.

The piece is in very good condition, firm, and with its hanging system checked. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specialized since 2015 in antique furniture, with our own workshop in Navalcarnero and serving over 3,500 families throughout Spain.

Preguntas frecuentes
