DESCRIPTION

A single armchair can be placed wherever it fits. Two identical ones bring order to a room: they mark an axis on either side of a console table, face a sofa, or anchor the foot of a bed.

This pair of armchairs was made in Italy in the mid-20th century in the Louis XVI style: oval medallion backrest, turned and fluted front legs, and carvings of ribbons, bows, and acanthus leaves. They are not 18th-century armchairs, nor are they presented as such. We chose them because they are a pair, identical in model, and because they arrived with their original paint and upholstery in very good condition.

The frame is made of carved wood painted in cream, with an ochre patina in the carved recesses that defines the pattern. The backrest features an upholstered oval medallion topped by an openwork bow, with three turned balusters below it resting on a crossbar with a carved garland. The uprights terminate in pinecones.

The armrests feature upholstered pads and acanthus leaves carved into the supports and consoles. The seat rail is carved with a scrolled ribbon, and the rear legs are saber-shaped. The upholstery is a patterned fabric with a satin ivory background, featuring yellow flowers and green stems, finished with gold braid. The back of the medallion is also upholstered.

58 cm wide, 51 cm deep, and 100 cm high each. They are light armchairs with a wide seat and an open backrest that does not obstruct the view: perfect on either side of a console in an entrance hall, facing a sofa in the living room, or in a bedroom by a window.

WHY THIS PAIR AND NOT ANOTHER

→ They are a pair. The same model, same carving, same paint, and the same fabric on both. An armchair of this type appears from time to time; two identical ones with the same upholstery, very rarely.

→ The backrest. An upholstered oval medallion at the top, three turned balusters below, and a carved garland on the crossbar. It lets light pass through, making the chair visually light.

→ The paint. Cream with an ochre patina in the recesses: this is how they arrived from Italy. It has not been repainted or retouched in our workshop.

→ The fabric. Satin ivory background with yellow flowers and green stems, with its original braid. It is the fabric they arrived with, and it is clean and taut on the seats, backrests, and armrests.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, both armchairs were inspected: the frame, the joints of the armrests and backrest, the stability of the legs, and the condition of the upholstery. No intervention was necessary.

The paint and the fabric have not been touched: they are exactly as they arrived from Italy. The structure is firm in both, the upholstery is clean, and the paint retains some minimal signs of wear on the armrests. They are ready to be brought home.

What we know about this piece

The medallion armchair appeared in France around 1770, with the Louis XVI taste for straight lines, fluted legs, and carved ribbons. Italy adopted it, and its workshops continued making them into the 20th century, painted in light tones. These two are Italian, mid-century, made of carved wood and painted cream with an ochre patina. Medallion back with an openwork ribbon, three balusters, and a garland on the crossbar. They were only inspected in the workshop. The paint and fabric are not ours: they are original to the pieces.
