DESCRIPTION

A round table has no corners to bump into. That is why it belongs where there is movement: by a door, next to an armchair, or in the center of a nook.

This French pedestal table was crafted from walnut between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, following the *guéridon* model used in France since the time of Louis Philippe: a round top, a single pedestal, and a tripod base. It came from an antique dealer. We chose it for its pedestal.

The shaft is turned with a series of balls along its upper section, a continuous row that catches the side light. Below this is a vase-shaped balustrade, several rings, and a cylindrical block where the three legs are fitted.

The legs are curved, with flat edges, and end in small scrolled feet. The top, made of several walnut planks, is framed by a molded edge. On it, one can see the grain, the dark areas of the heartwood, and small marks of use.

It measures 63 cm in diameter and 72 cm in height, the height of a dining table. In a kitchen or by a window, it serves as a table for two; in the living room, next to a high-armed chair; in an entryway, for keys and a vase. It sits high next to a low sofa, and it is worth knowing that beforehand. It weighs 10 kg.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE

→ The ball-turned shaft. It is the first thing you see from the doorway. Each ball casts its own shadow, and the pedestal changes according to the time of day.

→ The unstained walnut. The washing process removed the dirt without affecting the color: the honey tone is the natural color of the wood.

→ The 72 cm height. It is not just a side table. With two chairs, it is perfect for breakfast or coffee.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In our workshop, the wood of the top, shaft, and legs was washed to remove accumulated dirt, with no varnish or stain applied. The structure was checked.

The tone has not changed with the washing: it is the original color of the walnut. The marks of use and age on the top and base remain where they were. The table stands firmly on its three legs. It arrives ready to take its place.

What we know about this piece

In 17th-century France, a *guéridon* was a candlestick stand in the shape of a servant. The name later transferred to a small table with a round top and a central pedestal, which became a common side table in 19th-century French homes. This piece was made of walnut between the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was sourced from an antique dealer; its exact date is unknown. It retains its ball-turned pedestal and three curved legs. In the workshop, the wood was only cleaned. The tone is original.
