DESCRIPTION

Placed in the center of a room, a piece of furniture is seen from all sides at once. If it has a back, it shows.

This round marquetry table was made in the second half of the 20th century, based on the neoclassical tripod model with ram's heads and hoof feet. It is a 20th-century piece that follows that design, not an 18th-century antique. It came from an antiques dealer.

The top is a tray: it is surrounded by a molded edge, gilded on the inside. In the center, there is a rosette of light-colored wood petals; from it, bouquets of palmettes and flowers radiate in a cross pattern against a dark background. Around it is a honey-toned border.

Three curved legs support it. Each one starts at a carved ram's head, with curled horns and gilded fleece, and ends in a hoof, also gilded. At mid-height, a ring joins them with gilded brackets.

The apron, the legs, and the ring have a painted finish that imitates burl wood. A gilded molding runs along the bottom of the apron.

It measures 80 cm in diameter and 64 cm in height, and weighs 20 kg.

It is taller than a low coffee table: it reaches the height of an armchair armrest. It fits well in the center of a living room, between two armchairs; in a foyer, under a ceiling lamp; or next to a window, with books and a plant.

In front of a low-seat sofa, to set down coffee without standing up, it is too high. This table is meant to be placed between armchairs, not in front of them.

THREE DEFINING DETAILS

→ The rams. Three carved heads, one on each leg, with a wooden muzzle and gilded fleece. They are visible from any point in the room.

→ The marquetry on the top. Rosette, palmettes, and flowers in two-tone woods. The border has some fine cracks in the veneer, following the grain, which can be seen in the photo from above.

→ The tray edge. The top is recessed under a molded edge. Anything placed on it will not roll onto the floor.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, the structure was checked: the connection of the three legs with the apron and the ring. Then the entire surface was cleaned—marquetry, gilding, and painted finish—without varnish or new color.

The wear on the gilding on the apron and the hooves, the scuffs on the legs, and the cracks in the veneer remain where they were. No workshop color has been applied. The table sits firmly on its three legs. It is ready for your home.

What we know about this piece

The tripod with ram's heads and hoof feet comes from Roman altars unearthed in Herculaneum and Pompeii in the mid-18th century. Paris called it an athénienne, and the Neoclassical style turned it into a piece of furniture. This table was made in the second half of the 20th century based on that model and came from an antique dealer; its exact date is unknown. It retains the marquetry of the top, the three carved heads, and the original gilding, worn on the edges and hoofs. In the workshop, it was only inspected and cleaned.

Frequently asked questions

Is it an original piece or a reproduction?

It is a second-half 20th-century table that follows the neoclassical tripod model with ram's heads: it is a vintage piece, not an 18th-century item. The marquetry, carvings, gilding, and painted finish are original; no color has been applied in the workshop.

What restoration work has been carried out?

The structure of the three legs, the apron, and the rim was checked, and the marquetry, gilding, and painted finish were cleaned. The wear on the gilding and the fine cracks in the veneer have been left as they were. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Where does this table look best in a home?

In the center of a living room, between two armchairs; in an entrance hall, under a ceiling lamp; or next to a window. It measures 80 cm in diameter and 64 cm in height: higher than a low coffee table, at the height of an armchair armrest.
