DESCRIPTION

A round table has no front or back. It is meant to be surrounded, viewed from any armchair, and placed in the center of a room, away from the walls.

This round side table was made in Spain in the seventies, featuring the Renaissance repertoire that Spanish workshops of the time carved for living rooms and entryways: lions, acanthus leaves, and claw feet. It came from a private owner. We chose it for its four fully carved legs and for the stone.

The top is a disc of pink marble, veined in white and gray, with a darker band running across the lower section. It is set into a wooden rim with a frieze of carved leaves around the edge.

Each leg begins with a lion's head with a long mane and open mouth, continues with acanthus leaves, and curves down to a claw. All four face outward. Halfway down, a round shelf connects the legs, providing space for books or a box.

80 cm in diameter and 66 cm high. Between two armchairs, it holds a lamp and whatever you need close at hand; in the center of an entryway, it holds flowers. Being round and carved on all sides, it does not require a wall. It weighs 20 kg.

THREE DEFINING DETAILS

→ The lions. Four carved heads, with manes in tufts and teeth visible, one per leg. Since each one faces a different direction, the table has no "best" side.

→ The marble. Pink, with white and gray veins and a dark band crossing the stone. It is natural stone: this pattern is unique to this specific disc and cannot be repeated.

→ The shelf. Round, at mid-height, nestled between the four legs. It adds a second level without obscuring the carving.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, we performed a general cleaning of the wood and marble and inspected the structure: the joints connecting the legs to the rim and the shelf.

The color of the wood remains as it was, and the small marks of time were left in place. The structure is sturdy. It arrives ready to take its place.

What we know about this piece

Lions, acanthus leaves, and claw feet: the repertoire that the Renaissance borrowed from ancient Rome and that Spanish workshops carved again in the 20th century. This side table is from the seventies, Spanish, in carved wood with a pink marble top, and came from a private owner. It retains the four lion heads, one on each leg, and the marble disk in its leaf-adorned ring. In the workshop, it was cleaned and the structure was checked. The marks of time were not removed.

Frequently asked questions

Is it an original piece or a reproduction?

It is an original table from the 1970s, made in Spain in the Renaissance style: it is neither from the 16th century nor presented as such. The carving on the four legs and the natural marble top are original, and the color of the wood has not been altered in the workshop.

What restoration work has been carried out?

A general cleaning of the wood and marble was performed, and the structure was checked, including the joints where the legs meet the apron and the lower shelf. No color was applied, and the marks of time were respected. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Where does this piece look best in the home?

With a diameter of 80 cm and a height of 66 cm, it works well between two armchairs or next to a sofa as a lamp table, in the center of an entrance hall with flowers, or in a reading nook. Since it is round and carved on all sides, it can be placed away from the wall.

How is the shipping of a piece of this size handled?

Shipping is free throughout the Peninsula. Delivery is carried out by our own store staff: we place the piece inside the home, wherever access allows, and remove the packaging. We do not deliver to the curb.
