DESCRIPTION

A mirror in an entryway serves two purposes: it doubles the light in the foyer and it is the last thing you check before leaving the house.

This wooden mirror with a gilded crest was made in Spain in the 1960s, featuring a neoclassical repertoire: lugged corners, corner rosettes, and a scrolled crest topped with a fleur-de-lis. It came from a private owner. We chose it for its unique mix of finishes, which is quite unusual.

The frame combines three tones. The crest and the four rosettes are finished in gold. The edge moldings, featuring a wave frieze and a leaf frieze, are finished in silver. Between them runs a band in a toasted wood tone with diagonal incisions that add rhythm to the entire contour.

In the four corners, the frame extends outward into lugs, each with a rosette. In the center, there is a beveled mirror.

91 cm wide and 135 cm high. It looks perfect above a console in an entryway, over a dresser in the bedroom, or mounted vertically in a hallway. It weighs 20 kg: it requires a secure wall anchor.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE

→ The crest. Two large scrolls, two smaller ones at the ends, and a fleur-de-lis in the center, all in gold. It is the first thing you see when walking in.

→ The three tones. Gold, silver, and toasted wood in a single frame. It complements walnut, mahogany, or painted furniture without clashing with any of them.

→ The lugs. The corners extend outward and each features a gilded rosette. The outline is no longer a simple rectangle.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, light touch-ups were made to the gilding without changing the color or tone of the frame.

Small signs of wear were left as they were. The frame is sturdy and the mirror is in good condition. It leaves the workshop ready to go: just hang it and use it.

What we know about this piece

The corners that protrude from this frame are called ears and originate from classical architecture, where they framed doors and windows; 18th-century neoclassicism brought them to mirror and picture frames. This mirror is Spanish, from the sixties, and came from a private owner. It retains its scrollwork crest with a fleur-de-lis, the four corner rosettes, and the beveled glass. In the workshop, the gilding was only retouched in a few spots. The minor wear was left as is.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an original piece or a reproduction?

It is an original mirror from the sixties, made in Spain in the neoclassical style: it is not from the 18th century and is not presented as such. The gold leaf, silver leaf, and wood tone of the frame are original; only light touch-ups were made to the gilding in our workshop.

What restoration work has been carried out?

Light touch-ups were made to the gilding without changing the color of the frame, and the small signs of wear were preserved. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Where does this piece look best at home?

It measures 91 cm wide and 135 cm high. It works well over a console table in the entrance hall, above a chest of drawers in the bedroom, or hung vertically in a hallway. Weighing 20 kg, it should be hung using an appropriate wall anchor.

How is shipping managed for a piece of this size?

Shipping is free throughout the Peninsula. Delivery is carried out by our own store staff: we place the piece inside the home, where access allows, and remove the packaging. We do not deliver to the curb.
