DESCRIPTION

A large mirror in an entryway is not just looked at; it is noticed. It doubles the light and makes a narrow hallway feel like another room.

This antique gold-leaf mirror was made in Spain in the late 19th century, featuring the Louis XV-style rocaille that was revived during that century for living rooms and foyers. It came from an antique dealer. We chose it for its crest, which is complete, and for its proportions: tall and narrow.

The crest is an openwork rocaille with a shell in the center, spiral leaves, and two bouquets of flowers cascading down the sides. Below, the upper profile of the frame curves to follow the shape of the glass.

The frame features a continuous frieze of relief scrolls, an inner cove in a lighter gold, and a beaded trim next to the glass. At the four corners, floral and leaf accents protrude from the contour. The mirror glass is beveled.

90 cm wide and 157 cm high. Perfect over a console table in the foyer, above a fireplace, or vertically in a room with high ceilings. It weighs 30 kg: it should be hung with a secure anchor.

WHAT TO LOOK AT CLOSELY

→ The crest. Openwork shell, spiral leaves, and flowers. From afar, it is a silhouette; up close, every petal has its own relief.

→ The frieze. Continuous scrolls around the entire frame, with no plain sections. The gold has worn more on the high-relief areas, which are the parts handled the most.

→ The corners. Four decorative floral clusters that protrude from the frame, breaking the rectangle.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, the entire ornamentation of the frame was inspected and the missing gold leaf was replaced, without re-gilding the rest.

The marks of wear and time on the gilding were left untouched. The frame is sturdy. It arrives ready to take its place.

What we know about this piece

The 19th century revived the Louis XV rocaille style: openwork shells, leaves, and flowers climbing up the crests of mirrors and console tables. It arrived in Spain along with French taste. This mirror is Spanish, from the late 19th century, gilded with gold leaf, and came from an antique dealer. It retains its crest with its openwork rocaille, the four corners with floral sprays, and the beveled glass. In the workshop, the ornamentation was inspected and the losses in the gold leaf were replaced. It was not regilded.
