DESCRIPTION

A wardrobe of this size is not placed in a room; the room is arranged around it.

This antique French wardrobe was crafted from cherry wood between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, featuring the Louis XV lines that the French provinces continued to use long after Paris had abandoned them. The door panels are made of elm burl. It was sourced from a French antique dealer.

Each door features two burl panels framed in solid cherry, with moldings that end in scrolls. Between the two doors is a fixed upright with its own narrow panel.

The hardware is hand-forged iron: long pin hinges with turned finials, openwork escutcheons, and a box lock that secures with its key. At the bottom, there is a full-width drawer with two ring pulls and an escutcheon set in a carved cartouche.

The apron is scalloped and carved with scrolls. The feet end in volutes. The cornice overhangs the body with rounded corners.

It measures 188 cm wide, 74 cm deep, and 249 cm high at the cornice; the body measures 163 cm wide and 63 cm deep. It weighs 100 kg.

Inside, there are three shelves and space for linens, blankets, or seasonal clothing. It works perfectly as a primary wardrobe in a large bedroom, or for coats and tablecloths in a spacious foyer or hallway.

It ships disassembled: the doors, shelves, and cornice are separate, and our crew assembles it on-site. At 249 cm tall, it requires ceilings over 2.55 m. It is advisable to measure beforehand.

WHAT IS NOT MADE TODAY

→ The elm burl. Four panels cut from the knotty area of the tree, with eyes, swirls, and shrinkage cracks that follow the grain. Even the two doors do not share the same pattern.

→ The forged iron hardware. The box lock, the key with its intricate eye, and the openwork escutcheons were made by hand in the forge. They still lock.

→ The pegs. The door frames are joined with mortise and tenon and secured with wooden pegs, which are visible at the corners. The drawer is constructed with hand-cut dovetails.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, the structure—body, doors, drawer, and cornice—was inspected. The entire piece was then cleaned and waxed.

Signs of wear remain where they were: scuffs, minor bumps, and the natural cracks of the burl. No color or stain has been applied. The door locks with its key and the drawer slides smoothly. It arrives ready to take its place.

What we know about this piece

In 18th-century rural France, the armoire usually arrived with a marriage: it was part of the dowry and held the household linens. This one was made of cherry wood between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with burr elm panels, and came from a French antique dealer. It retains its long wrought-iron hinges, the lock with its key, and the full-width drawer at the base. It was inspected, cleaned, and waxed in the workshop. The signs of wear were left as they were.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an original piece or a reproduction?

It is an authentic French armoire from the late 18th or early 19th century, made of cherry wood with olive burl panels. This is confirmed by the mortise and tenon joints with wooden pegs, the hand-cut dovetail drawer, and the wrought iron hardware. The finish is the original waxed wood; no color has been applied.

What restoration work has been carried out?

The structure of the body, doors, drawer, and cornice was inspected, and the wood was cleaned and waxed. Signs of wear and cracks in the burl were left as they were. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Where would this armoire look best in the home?

In a large bedroom, as a main wardrobe; or in a spacious hallway or landing for coats and linens. It measures 188 cm wide, 74 cm deep, and 249 cm high at the cornice, requiring ceilings over 2.55 m high.

How is the shipping handled for a piece of this size?
