DESCRIPTION

There are pieces of furniture meant to be admired from afar and pieces that beg you to come closer. The latter have a story to tell in every inch, and a house with one of them doesn't need much else.

This antique carved oak sideboard was made in France in the second half of the 19th century, in the style of the low sideboards from Normandy and Brittany: a long drawer, two doors, a cutout apron, and the entire front covered in carvings. It came from an antique dealer. We chose it for the two doors, each with a relief of fruit and leaves, and because it doesn't have a single smooth surface.

It is made of solid oak, with the patina it has acquired over a century and a half. The drawer features three oval reserves: rosettes on a checkered background at the sides and a rosette with leaves in the center, with two iron pulls and a keyhole. On each door, a molded arch with a hanging flower and, inside, a fruit relief: a pineapple on the left, a pomegranate with its branch on the right, among leaves and stems in the wind. The stiles are carved with vertical acanthus leaves, and the doors swing on turned iron pintle hinges.

The sides feature panels with palmettes and rosettes, the top is finished with a carved leaf edge, and the apron displays palmettes and scrolls over a wavy line. Inside, there is a shelf at mid-height. The back consists of panels joined with wooden pegs, without a single nail.

137 cm wide, 60 cm deep, and 97 cm high. In a dining room, it stores tableware and linens and supports what is served; in a living room, it is the piece that organizes a wall beneath a painting; in a wide hallway, it welcomes with presence. It weighs 50 kg.

WHAT TO LOOK AT CLOSELY

→ The door reliefs. Pineapple on the left, pomegranate on the right, surrounded by swaying leaves. In 19th-century French regional furniture, fruit was the symbol of a prosperous home.

→ The checkered background. In the drawer reserves and on the stiles, the wood features a grid incised by knife that darkens the background and makes the rosette pop. It is hours of work.

→ The pegged back. The panels are fitted into the stiles and secured with wooden pegs. They are visible from the back: it is the construction method from before the era of screws.

→ The top. Oak boards with open grain, marks, a knot, and some joints that have separated over the years. It was neither sanded nor filled.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, the entire structure was checked until it was stable, the two drawer pulls, which were loose, were secured, and the lock was repaired until it functioned with its key.

The patina, signs of use, and marks of time have not been touched: the color is its own and the joints on the top were left as they were. The structure is firm, the drawer slides, and the doors lock. It is ready to enter your home.

What we know about this piece

In Normandy and Brittany, the two-door low sideboard was the staple piece of furniture in kitchens and living rooms during the 18th and 19th centuries, and in the 19th century, regional workshops covered it with carvings: fruits, leaves, birds, and palmettes. This piece was made in France in the second half of the 19th century, from solid oak, and came from an antique dealer. It retains its turned iron pintle hinges, the back with wooden pegs, and the two fruit reliefs on the doors, a pineapple and a pomegranate. In the workshop, the structure was stabilized, the handles were secured, and the lock was repaired. The patina was left untouched: it is the original.
