DESCRIPTION

A bed with two different nightstands is noticeable. The eye travels from the high side to the low side, from the handle of one to the handle of the other. With two identical ones, the wall remains still.

This pair of nightstands painted in blue was made in France in the mid-20th century, following the Louis XV style that French workshops continued to produce for the bedroom: wavy front, cabriole legs, and a carved shell on the apron. They came from an antique dealer. We chose them because there are two, the same model, and because the carving and moldings held up well to a color change.

Each nightstand features three drawers with a wavy front, raised molding, and rocaille brass handles. The drawers are made of beech, unpainted on the inside, and slide on wooden runners. The scalloped apron features a carved shell in the center. The corner posts are fluted and descend into cabriole legs ending in scrolls. The sides have paneled moldings, and the top has a scalloped edge with trim.

The blue is from our workshop. It was hand-painted in a grayish, powdery blue, then distressed on the edges, moldings, and corners of the legs until the wood showed through. The inside of the drawers was left in its natural beech finish.

44 cm wide, 33 cm deep, and 72 cm high, each. They are tall: they sit at the height of a high mattress or a bed with a storage base. On either side of a double bed, in a guest bedroom, or as a pair of side tables next to a sofa. They weigh 10 kg each.

WHAT IS NOT MADE TODAY

→ The wavy front. Each drawer follows an S-curve that continues into the top and the apron. The three drawers of each nightstand were cut for the same curve and fit flush without a step.

→ The shell. Carved into the apron, with its ridges and scroll at the bottom. It is the signature of the Louis XV style, and here it is on both, identical.

→ There are two. Same model, same dimensions, same handles, and the same blue applied on the same day. One nightstand like this appears; two identical ones, rarely.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, the structure of both nightstands, legs, top, and drawers was inspected, and the surface was prepared by hand. They were then painted in grayish-blue and the color was distressed on the edges and moldings until the wood could be seen. The brass handles were cleaned.

The structure is firm in both, the six drawers slide smoothly, and the beech interior was left unpainted. They leave the workshop finished: ready to be placed and used.

What we know about this piece

The Louis XV bedside table features a serpentine front, cabriole legs, and a shell motif on the apron: the hallmark of French furniture from 1730 to 1760, which provincial workshops continued to replicate for the bedroom throughout the 20th century. These two pieces date to the mid-20th century, are French, crafted from solid wood with beech drawers, and were acquired from an antique dealer. They retain all six brass rocaille pulls and the carved shell on each apron. In the workshop, the structure was checked and they were hand-painted, with a distressed finish on the edges and moldings. The tables are period pieces. The blue is ours.

Frequently asked questions

Is it an original piece or a reproduction?

These are two mid-20th-century French bedside tables, made of solid wood with beech drawers, following the Louis XV style: serpentine front, carved shell motif, and cabriole legs. They are not from the 18th century, nor are they presented as such. The grey-blue finish is from our workshop.

What restoration work has been carried out?

The structure of both pieces was checked, the surface was hand-prepared, and they were painted in grey-blue with a distressed "décapé" finish on the edges and moldings; the brass handles were cleaned, and the beech interiors were left unpainted. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Where does this piece fit best in the home?

On either side of a double bed or in a guest bedroom. They measure 44 cm wide, 33 cm deep, and 72 cm high each: ideal for a high mattress or a bed with a storage base. They also work well as a pair of side tables next to a sofa.
