DESCRIPTION

A side table must solve three things: a top that keeps items from falling off, a drawer for small objects, and a place for books. If it is also lightweight, it can be moved with one hand.

This pair of side tables was made in France in the mid-20th century in the Directoire style: straight lines, spindle-turned legs, and ring pulls. We chose them because they are a matching pair, are finished on all four sides, and feature wood with a beautiful grain.

They are made of cherry-toned wood with a varnish finish. The top features a raised edge at the back and sides, open at the front, like a tray. Below, there are two small drawers, side by side, with brass ring pulls and dovetail joints. The sides and back feature framed panels.

The legs are turned, with a set of rings at the top, a spindle shaft, and a turned foot. At mid-height, there is a shelf, also with a raised edge. The back is finished just like the front, so they can be placed away from a wall.

40 cm wide, 31 cm deep, and 68 cm high each. As nightstands, they sit at the height of a tall mattress and occupy little space. In a living room, they work well on either side of a sofa or next to an armchair, with a lamp on top. Together they weigh 20 kg.

THREE DEFINING DETAILS

→ The tray-style top. Raised edge on three sides, open at the front. A glass, glasses, or a watch won't fall off the back.

→ The two drawers. Small, side by side, with brass ring pulls. Opening them reveals the dovetail joints on the sides.

→ The four sides. Sides and back feature framed panels and the same finish as the front. They can be placed in the center of a room.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, both tables were cleaned and the structure was inspected: the leg joints, shelf, and drawers. The four ring pulls were also checked and are firm.

The color has not been altered: the tone and varnish are as they arrived from France. The structure is sturdy and the drawers slide smoothly. They retain slight signs of use on the tops and legs. They arrive ready to take their place.

What we know about this piece

The Directoire style lasted in France for barely five years, from 1795 to 1799, and left behind furniture with straight lines, turned legs, and little ornamentation. French workshops revived it in the 20th century for small home furniture. These two side tables are from that time, from the mid-century: they have a lipped top, two drawers with brass ring pulls, and a shelf. They are finished on all four sides. In the workshop, they were cleaned, and the structure and handles were checked. The color was left untouched.
