Almost all antique wardrobes that come to market have lost their mirror along the way. Someone replaced it with a modern one and, inadvertently, erased half of its history.

This antique wardrobe with its original mirror was built in Spain at the end of the 19th century, in the midst of the Alphonsine period. It was an era of eclecticism: cabinetmakers skillfully blending carving, turning, and ebonizing for bourgeois bedroom pieces that were meant to last generations.

Here is all that vocabulary: the carved crest crowning the cornice, the spiraling half-columns flanking the door, the lozenge-shaped lattice over the arch, and the ebonized fillets that define each line. And in the center, its original mercury mirror, with the imperfections typical of its age. We have deliberately kept them: that veil of time is not manufactured—it is inherited. No modern mirror can imitate it.

At 119 cm wide and 252 cm high with its crest, it requires generous ceilings and a prominent wall. In a bedroom, it functions as a wardrobe with soul; in a hallway or dressing room, the antique mirror multiplies light with that warmth that only vintage mercury silvering provides. The interior offers shelves and two small drawers, in addition to the bottom plinth drawer.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The original mercury mirror with its preserved imperfections. We decided not to replace it: it is the signature of time on the piece, and changing it would have been erasing a century and a half of life for an ordinary reflection.

→ The hand-carved spiraling half-columns and partial ebonizing — a combination that required two different trades in the same workshop and that mass production has never replicated.

→ Its complete and honest interior: shelves, two small drawers at mid-height, and a drawer in the plinth. It serves equally well as a wardrobe, a living room cabinet, or a hall closet.

The piece has been structurally reviewed: frame, door, crest, shelves, and drawers. It has been treated against woodworms, hinges and latches have been adjusted, and the wood has been hand-cleaned and nourished, respecting both the ebonizing and the original mirror, which has been kept intact by express decision.

The structure is firm, the door closes correctly, and the drawers slide smoothly. It arrives ready to take its place.
