What we know about this piece
The cylinder desk appeared in France around 1760: a curved lid that slides down to keep work enclosed. The first famous one was made for Louis XV. This piece was manufactured between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, veneered in cherry wood with walnut banding. The cylinder is solid, made from a single piece; the drawers feature hand-cut dovetail joints, and the locks are made of wrought iron. The mechanism was serviced in the workshop, and the bronze elements were cleaned. The leather on the writing surface, which had deteriorated, was replaced with antiqued fabric. Signs of use have been preserved.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know it's late 18th century and not a reproduction?
A: By its construction: hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, wrought iron locks with riveted nails, and a back made of hand-sawn planks with forged nails. None of these three things have been made this way for over a century.
What work was done in the workshop?
A: The internal structure, drawers, and cylinder were checked, the bronzes were cleaned, and the exterior was cleaned and finished. The leather on the writing surface was replaced with an aged fabric. The signs of use have not been touched.
Does the cylinder work and do the drawers close?
A: Yes. The cylinder moves up and down its full range, and the four long drawers lock. The keys are delivered with the furniture.
How is shipping handled for a piece of this size?
A: Shipping is free throughout the Iberian Peninsula. Delivery is carried out by the store's own staff: we place the piece inside the home, where access allows, and remove the packaging. We do not deliver to the curb.
