What we know about this piece
The roll-top desk originated in American offices in the 19th century, and by the early 20th century, it was already found in banks, notary offices, and law firms across half of Europe. This piece was manufactured in Paris in the first quarter of the 20th century and bears the manufacturer’s brass plaque beneath the lock: Continental, 3, Boulevard Voltaire. Solid oak, handles carved from the wood itself, an S-curved roll-top that glides along its tracks and locks, and two filing drawers with dividers. In the workshop, the oak was stripped and left in its raw state. The signs of wear were not concealed.
Frequently asked questions
Is it an original American desk or a reproduction?
It is an original piece from the first quarter of the 20th century. It retains its manufacturer's plate, Continental (3, Bd Voltaire, Paris), under the rolltop lock, the solid oak carved handles, and the signs of wear typical of its age.
What restoration work has been carried out?
The oak was stripped and sanded by hand until raw, the rolltop mechanism and its locks were checked, and the eight drawers and pull-out shelves were adjusted. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.
Where does this desk look best in a home?
In a living room, it organizes teleworking and closes it when finished; in an office or library, it stands alone, also facing away, because the back is paneled. It measures 127 × 80 × 123 cm, with the tabletop at 80 cm and legroom of 68 × 52 cm: it can accommodate a modern office chair.
How is shipping handled for a piece of this size?
