DESCRIPTION

A dining room is ordered by the chairs before the table. When all chairs are identical, the table can be anything.

This set of six cane medallion chairs was made in France in the 1950s, based on the Louis XVI model: oval back, straight fluted legs, and cane seat and back. These are 20th-century chairs that follow that style, not 18th-century pieces. They came from an antique dealer. We chose them because there were six.

The back is a beech medallion with multi-profile molding. It encloses the cane and descends to the seat via two fluted stiles. The shield-shaped seat repeats the molding around the cane.

There is a carved rosette on the corner blocks of the front legs; the back ones feature a plain square. The legs are turned, fluted throughout their height, and end in a ringed foot.

Each chair measures 48 cm wide, 48 cm deep, and 92 cm high. The six surround a rectangular dining table of 180 to 200 cm or a round one of 140 to 150 cm. In an open kitchen, around a breakfast table, they are suitable for everyday use. They weigh 8 kg each and can be moved with one hand.

THREE DETAILS THAT DEFINE THEM

→ The set of six. Same model, same carving, and same wood tone. Dining chair sets often arrive incomplete, in groups of four or five. This one arrives intact.

→ The new cane. Seats and backs have new octagonal weave cane. This is the part that wears out with use; the wood is what lasts.

→ The rosettes. One carved on each front corner block and plain squares on the back. The carving was reserved for what is seen when entering the dining room.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, the old cane was removed and new cane was installed on all six seats and all six backs.

The wood finish was not touched: it is the original, identical on all six chairs, in a honey tone. The structure has been inspected. They arrive ready to take their place.

What we know about this piece

The medallion-back chair originated in the French court of Louis XVI, starting in 1774: straight lines, fluted legs, and an oval back instead of the curves of the previous reign. France continued to produce them throughout the 20th century. These six are French, from the 1950s, and came from an antique dealer. They retain a carved rosette on each front block. In the workshop, new caning was installed on the seats and backs. The wood finish was left untouched: it is the one they came with.

Frequently asked questions

Is it an original piece or a reproduction?

These are six French chairs from the 1950s that follow the 18th-century Louis XVI model: they are not from that period, nor are they presented as such. They are originals from the mid-20th century, with the same carving, turning, and wood finish with which they were made.

What restoration work has been carried out?

The previous cane was removed and replaced with new octagonal-weave cane on all six seats and six backrests. The original wood finish was left untouched, and no workshop paint or stain has been applied. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Where do these chairs look best in the home?

In the dining room, around a rectangular table measuring 180 to 200 cm or a round one of 140 to 150 cm. They also work well in an open kitchen with an eat-in table. Each chair measures 48 × 48 × 92 cm and weighs 8 kg.

How is the shipping of a piece of this size handled?

Shipping is free throughout the Peninsula. Delivery is carried out by our own store staff: we place the six chairs inside the home where access permits and remove the packaging. We do not offer curbside delivery.
