DESCRIPTION

The corners of a house are easily neglected. They become filled with miscellaneous items or are left empty, and in both cases, their potential is lost. The right piece is all it takes for a corner to stop being a mere void and become an integral part of the living room.

This pair of side tables was made in the mid-20th century, following the historicist taste of the Napoleon III style. Two twin pieces, designed to complement each other, with the marquetry and bronzes that defined the salon furniture of that tradition.

The octagonal top features floral marquetry of fine woods: a central bouquet on an ebonized background, surrounded by acanthus scrolls and fruits in amber and orange tones. In each corner, a silver-plated bronze appliqué depicts a trophy of musical instruments —lyre, violin, sheet music—. A gallery of turned balusters runs along the edge, and the fluted legs end in turned feet on a lower shelf with the same marquetry. This type of piece-by-piece composite marquetry is not mass-produced today.

Each table measures 50 cm wide by 50 cm deep and 72 cm high: the perfect height to flank a sofa, serve as nightstands on either side of a bed, or be placed in an entryway. As a pair, they bring order to the space with a symmetry that a single piece cannot achieve.

No two are alike. There will be no restocking.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The silver-plated bronze appliqués with musical trophies. They are not just any ornament: they are the motif that organizes the corners and gives the tables their classic salon character. The relief of the lyre and violin retains a sharpness that modern casting rarely achieves.

→ The patina of the tabletop. The years have settled the varnish and softened the color of the marquetry, leaving a surface with a warm depth that no new finish can imitate. The small marks of use are part of that history.

→ That there are two of them. Placed symmetrically —on either side of a sofa, a bed, or a console— they create an immediate balance in the room. It's the kind of detail that is felt even if it cannot be named.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

We have inspected the structure of both tables, checking the firmness of the legs, the baluster galleries, and the lower shelves. The bronze appliqués have been secured, the marquetry cleaned, and the tabletop treated to stabilize the varnish without erasing the patina that gives it value.

Both pieces are firm, complete, and balanced, ready for daily use. They arrive ready to take their place.

A pair selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración —specializing in antique furniture since 2015, with its own workshop in Navalcarnero and over 3,500 families served throughout Spain.

Preguntas frecuentes
