In 1804, a man from Lyon patented a machine that made all the weavers in the city nervous.

His name was Joseph-Marie Jacquard.

His loom did one thing: read perforated cardboard cards and, depending on where the holes were, raise certain threads and not others.

Jacquard's father wove two centimeters of brocade a week.

With that machine, a skilled weaver could do sixty.

Thirty times more. The Canuts, the silk weavers of Lyon, perfectly understood what that meant. In April 1805, Napoleon himself went to see it and granted the patent for the loom to the city.

Two hundred years later, silk is still woven by hand in Lyon.

And those cardboard cards had descendants. Charles Babbage wanted them for his analytical engine. Herman Hollerith used them to count the 1890 United States census. From there, IBM was born. And from there, in a straight line, the computer or mobile device you are using to read this.

It's worth reading twice, because it's the strangest part of this story.

The technology that scares artisans today was born within an artisan workshop.

Artificial intelligence is not here to replace artisans: it is here to give them back the hours that paperwork steals from them. And those hours are the difference between a workshop that closes and a workshop that stays open.

The unseen workday: why workshops really close

A workshop almost never closes because its work is no longer liked.

It closes because of everything else.

An artisan spends the day at the workbench. And when that's over, the other workday begins: photos, website, descriptions, invoices, shipping, taxes, unanswered messages.

What artificial intelligence actually does in a small workshop

Everyone talks about what AI will destroy. Almost no one talks about what it can sustain.

In a small business, artificial intelligence does the boring stuff: writes product sheets, organizes inventory, transfers measurements to the website, prepares shipping paperwork, gets invoices ready.

What used to take a week of nights can now be resolved in an afternoon.

Without hiring a department. Without ceasing to be small. Without touching what makes the work worthwhile.

It's exactly what Jacquard's loom did with brocade: it didn't invent the taste for silk or replace the hand that decides. It removed the mechanical work surrounding it.

For the first time in decades, being small is no longer an administrative sentence.

What no machine can do

A few weeks ago, someone wrote to us via web chat on a Sunday, at two in the afternoon:

"Ugh, forget it. If you don't use people to deal with people, I'm not interested in anything you have."

No greeting. No goodbye. Door closed.

We replied immediately. A person, with a name, on a Sunday at lunchtime. I don't know if they will write to us again, but they were half right. And it's worth saying which half.

No machine has ever glued a drawer.

None can distinguish walnut from chestnut by running a hand over the grain. None decides that one dresser is worth it and another isn't. None knows when a piece needs to stop and wait for the glue to dry.

Some time ago we told the story of the man who took three weeks to sand a table. That story is still true. Restoration cannot be rushed: it must be respected.

Woodworm is not treated with a chatbot. A 19th-century joint is not reinforced with an algorithm. And a conversation with someone who is hesitating between two pieces for their living room needs to be held by a person who has touched them.

Technology reduces the paperwork surrounding the craft. Not the craft itself.

For years, competing against large furniture chains was an uneven battle in every way except one: they will never have unique pieces.

They had more budget, more people, more technology. The small guy only had judgment and hands.

That has just changed.

Today, a three-person workshop can have the same administrative machinery as a chain with hundreds of employees. Photography, logistics, management: equalized.

What isn't equalized is everything else. A workshop that smells of wood and wax. A person who responds to the chat, sometimes on a Sunday at two in the afternoon. A piece that doesn't exist duplicated in any other living room.

Big businesses sell volume. The workshop sells authenticity. And now, for the first time, with the same tools.

The uncomfortable part: AI also creates "artisan" lies

It would be dishonest to only tell you the good side.

The same technology that frees up hours in a real workshop also writes, in seconds, false stories of "handmade with love" for mass-produced furniture thousands of miles away.

You will increasingly see stores that sound like workshops but are not.

How to distinguish them: ask for verifiable signs. Real photos of the process, not just the result. A physical address where you can see the pieces. People with names who respond. Transparency about which finishes have been applied and which the piece had originally.

And a simple rule: when the story is perfect but no one shows their face, be suspicious.
