DESCRIPTION

There’s a difference between having books and living with them.

The former are arranged on a wall. The latter end up next to the sofa, on the bedside table, sometimes on the floor. Because they are in use.

This vintage auxiliary bookshelf was made for that second type of reader. Solid wood, second half of the 20th century, Asian colonial production that took the design of early 20th century English bookshelves and adapted it to a more domestic format.

The structure is what makes the piece. Columns of vertical slats that allow the spines to be seen from the outside. Crossed shelves that create four independent compartments at each level. And an upper tray with a perimeter gallery, designed so that nothing falls out when the furniture is moved.

Because it moves. It runs on hidden wheels beneath the base.

No coated particleboard shelf can withstand this use for sixty years. This one already has.

56 × 56 × 73 cm. The height is that of an end table: you read, you rest your cup, you leave the book open face down. It fits next to an armchair, beside the sofa, at the foot of a bed, or as a service cabinet in an office.

No two are alike. There will be no restocking.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The crossed shelves. They are not decoration: they are the system that allows books to be stored on all four sides without one book pushing the one behind it. Each compartment works independently.

→ The wood grain, visible on the top tray and the edges of the shelves. Reddish tones that no melamine can imitate, with the color settlement that only decades provide.

→ That it is a mobile piece of furniture. A bookshelf that is placed where you are reading today, not where the assembler left it.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

A work of revision, not reinvention. We checked the joints of the columns and shelves, reinforced where there was play, and reviewed the wheel system of the base.

The structure is firm and level, with no swaying when loaded. The finish retains its original tone, nourished and homogeneous. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specialists since 2015 in antique furniture, with their own workshop in Navalcarnero and more than 3,500 families throughout Spain.
