DESCRIPTION

There are houses that are furnished and houses that tell stories. The latter require pieces with something to say: a hand-carved Balinese bookcase undeniably belongs to the second group.

This piece was constructed in the second half of the 20th century from carved Balinese architectural elements: corbels, columns, and friezes that originally framed a doorway and were transformed into a bookcase by an artisan. That's why it's unlike any other.

The upper friezes are carved with wave motifs that intertwine without repeating, the columns feature scale and leaf carvings, and the entire front retains an indigo blue polychromy that time has stripped away to reveal the wood underneath. This wear cannot be imitated: no factory today produces such hand carving, nor a blue with half a century of history behind it.

Standing 197 cm high and 108 cm wide at the top —98 cm in the central body—, it offers four levels of open storage. It functions as a bookcase in a living room or study, as an open hutch for crockery, or as a sculptural piece in a spacious hallway. It is delivered assembled.

No two are alike. There will be no restocking.

── WHAT WE LOVE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The hand-carved wave friezes at the top: each spiral is distinct because it came from a chisel, not a mold. It's the first thing anyone entering the room notices.

→ The naturally stripped indigo blue. Half a century of use has worn away the pigment exactly where it should, leaving a finish that no workshop can reproduce without it looking artificial.

→ Its dual character: from the front it is a striking ethnic piece; filled with books and objects, it integrates into classic and contemporary interiors with equal naturalness.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

In the workshop, we review the entire structure, adjust and reinforce the joints and shelves, and hand-clean the piece, respecting the original blue polychromy and its natural distressed finish. We do not touch the patina: it is the most valuable part of the piece.

The structure is solid, the shelves are firm, and the finish remains stable. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specializing since 2015 in antique furniture, with its own workshop in Navalcarnero and serving over 3,500 families throughout Spain.
