DESCRIPTION

There's a silent hierarchy in any room. The walls set the tone, the furniture defines the use, and the objects tell the story. The mirror is the only one that does all three at once.

This one was carved in some French workshop in the late 19th century, during the reign of Napoleon III, when wood was still worked with a chisel and gilding with gold leaf was the finish of those who had something to prove. Profuse carving, plant motifs, perfect symmetry, beveled glass. No shortcuts.

The first thing you notice is the frame. Each acanthus leaf, each floral swathe, each volute on the corners is hand-carved on solid wood and coated with very thin sheets of genuine gold. This texture changes with the light: in the morning it offers a pale, almost straw-like gold; at dusk it turns warm copper. It's an effect that no modern finish can reproduce.

At 150 centimeters high and 119 wide, it's not a decorative mirror — it's a point of gravity. Above a console table in a hallway, on a living room wall, presiding over a dining room, or as the main piece in a bedroom. Wherever it's hung, it organizes the room.

No two are alike. There will be no restocks.

── WHAT WE LOVE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ Genuine gold leaf gilding. It's not glitter, it's not gold lacquer, it's not metallic paint. These are real gold sheets applied over the red bole that subtly emerges in the highest areas of the carving — that is the signature of fine gold, what distinguishes a workshop piece from an industrial imitation.

→ The wood carving. Each corner involved weeks of chisel work by a craftsman: rosettes, swags, acanthus leaves, fruits. The precision and natural asymmetry of handmade work are noticeable when you run your hand over the molding. That texture is not mass-produced.

→ Beveled glass. The bevel on 19th-century mirrors was made by hand, with stone and water. It has a width and cleanliness that modern industrial bevels cannot achieve — and it's noticeable every time a ray of light crosses it.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

We worked on the frame with the caution required by a gold leaf piece. We checked the wooden structure of the frame, reinforced the rear joints, treated for wood-boring insects, and consolidated the areas of the carving that time had weakened. The original gilding was fully respected, dry-cleaned to preserve the patina and the red bole that peeks through in just the right spots.

The beveled glass is preserved in its original condition, not replaced. The hanging system has been checked and reinforced to safely support the weight of the piece. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specializing since 2015 in antique furniture, with its own workshop in Navalcarnero and more than 3,500 families served throughout Spain.

Preguntas frecuentes
