DESCRIPTION

Narrow walls are the hardest to furnish. Too narrow for a painting, too bare to leave blank. Most end up forgotten.

This gilded gold leaf mirror understands them. It was carved in the mid-20th century following the Rococo style, that of Louis XV: dynamic lines, measured asymmetry, and breathable carving. Ninety-nine centimeters high by barely thirty wide. Vertical, slender, made to command without taking up space.

The crest is the first thing the eye sees. A carved scallop shell in the center, opening like a fan, flanked by acanthus scrolls that curl inward. Along the frame, a diamond-patterned interlace engraved with a gouge on the wood. The gold leaf changes with the light: pale gold in the morning, almost copper at dusk. And on the edges, the red bole preparation shows through. That cannot be imitated. It is time leaving its signature.

Thirty centimeters wide allows it to fit where almost nothing else does. A narrow hallway, the space between two doors, the side of a console, a passage wall that longed for something and never found it. And being a mirror, it brings light and depth to the darkest corner of the house.

No two are alike. There will be no restocking.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The scallop shell crest. Hand-carved, opening like a fan over two acanthus scrolls. It is the detail that gives it its unique character, and which no factory can mass-produce without it being obvious.

→ The gold leaf with just the right amount of wear. On the edges, the red bole underneath shows through, the base that the gilder applies before the gold. It appears naturally with age. It is not a defect: it is proof that the gilding is real.

→ What it does for a difficult wall. Narrow and tall, it fills the gap that no painting could, and multiplies the light reaching the corner.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

We completely overhauled it in the workshop. We consolidated the wood of the frame and reinforced the joints of the crest's volutes, which is where these pieces show the passage of time. We touched up the gold leaf gilding, respecting the original patina, without covering the wear that gives it character, and checked the mirror's silvering and its fastening.

Today, the frame is firm, the gilding stable, and the glass clean and securely fixed. It arrives ready to take its place.

Preguntas frecuentes
