DESCRIPTION

There are two kinds of mirrors. Those that only reflect your image, and those that also command the wall. The latter are hardly made anymore: they are too much work.

This gilded bronze mirror is of the second type. It is not gilded wood: it is solid bronze, cast and chased, with all the weight and luster that only metal can give. It was made in the mid-20th century in the Louis XV style, rococo: curved lines, asymmetry, a horror of empty spaces.

The frame is pure openwork. Scrolling tendrils, very fine lattice panels, garlands of tiny flowers. At the top, a female mascaron with a shell headdress presides over the mirror; below, a scallop shell responds to it. Bronze catches light differently from wood: it gleams on the edges, and recedes into the hollows. And the silvering retains that cloudy patina of mirrors that have already lived.

It measures 84 centimeters wide by 77 high. Horizontal, made to preside: above a console in the hall, on a bedroom dresser, in a fireplace opening. Wherever you place it, it will be the focal point. And as a mirror, it multiplies the light in the room.

No two are alike. There will be no replenishment.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The mascaron on the crest. A woman's face cast in bronze, with her shell headdress, presiding over the ensemble. It is the detail that transforms a mirror into a piece with character, and one that no factory can reproduce with such clarity.

→ The openwork bronze. It is not wood or resin: it is hand-cast and chased metal, with the weight and luster of real bronze. The openwork allows the background wall to show through and plays with the light.

→ What it does on a wall. Horizontal and exuberant, it fills the void above a console or dresser and becomes the center of the room without asking permission.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

We fully overhauled it in the workshop. We cleaned the bronze, respecting its gilding, checked the fastening of the openwork frame, and reviewed the mirror's silvering and its hanging system. We inspected each scroll to ensure no piece was missing or loose.

Today the bronze looks stable and bright, the mirror is firm, and the piece arrives ready to hang. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specializing since 2015 in antique furniture, with our own workshop in Navalcarnero, 30 minutes from Madrid, and over 3,500 families served throughout Spain.
