DESCRIPTION

Some pieces are made to last.

And then there are those that have already lasted 250 years.

This bench was built in the late 18th century in a convent or monastery in the interior of the Iberian Peninsula. Solid oak wood, assembled with hand-forged nails and wooden pegs, without a single industrial screw because it would be another century before they were invented. Six turned baluster-style legs. Lower crossbars in both directions. Carpenter's construction that knew his piece would survive several generations.

And here it remains.

Almost two meters long. Forty centimeters high. The exact dimensions of a low refectory bench — for sitting at the long table during the Angelus prayer or for resting one's feet during hours of silence. Today it functions as a low living room table, a bench at the foot of the bed, or a pass-through piece in an entryway that wants to make a statement from the first second.

The tabletop's patina is from real use, not from a workshop. The wood's natural cracks, the marks of centuries, the visible knots. It cannot be reproduced. It cannot be imitated. It can only be preserved.

No two are alike. By definition. A piece like this will not be made again.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ Documentable authenticity: hand-forged nails, wooden pegs, pre-industrial joinery. Details that any expert would unhesitatingly date to the 18th century.

→ The six turned legs with crossbars: the structural solution that allowed these pieces to survive 250 years of real use in monasteries where nothing was decorative; everything was functional.

→ The tabletop's patina: impossible to replicate. The marks are from time, not an applied finish. The wood holds the memory of two and a half centuries.

── CONDITION ──

Original piece, preserved in its natural state. The structure is firm. The joints are solid. Small natural cracks in the tabletop — inherent and desirable in a piece of this age — that are part of its history.

A piece selected by Antique Arte y Decoración — specialists since 2015 in antique furniture and antiques, with their own workshop in Navalcarnero and over 3,500 families throughout Spain.

Preguntas frecuentes
