A dining room or a large living room needs a low, long piece of furniture that organizes the entire wall: dinnerware, tablecloths, everyday items, and what's brought out for guests. A single piece of furniture, with space for everything, that doesn't feel visually heavy.

This vintage oak sideboard was made in France in the mid-20th century, in the country house Louis XV style: three doors with arched panels, a slightly curved central drawer, a wavy skirt, and short cabriole legs. We chose it for its checkerboard top and because the interior is as well-maintained as the front.

It is made of solid oak, with the open grain visible under the wax. The top is composed of oak veneer squares placed with alternating grain, like a checkerboard, and is finished with a molded edge that follows the curve of the central body. The corner stiles feature a turned column, and the skirt has a carved palmette in the center. The drawer closes with a pull handle on two openwork rosettes; the doors have cut-out keyholes and a key. Inside: shelves in all three sections and, in the right one, two pull-out trays with light wood fronts.

181 cm wide, 56 cm deep, and 108 cm high. It is a long sideboard for a dining room or living room with a two-meter free wall, under a large mirror or painting. With a depth of 56 cm, it accommodates plates, platters, and tablecloths, and at 108 cm, the top is at serving height.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE

→ The checkerboard top. Oak squares with the grain turned relative to each other, changing tone depending on where the light comes from. This is what makes the top more than just a top.

→ The pull-out trays. Two, in the right section, with light wood fronts and wooden runners. They slide out completely: cutlery, napkins, everything you need to see at a glance.

→ The curved central front. The central drawer and door project in a curve over the side sections, and the top follows this line. This is what makes it Louis XV and not a straight sideboard with adornments.

INTERVENTION AND CONSERVATION — NAVALCARNERO WORKSHOP, MADRID

The wood was washed throughout the piece, inside and out, to remove accumulated dirt, and natural wax was applied by hand to the clean oak. It has not been stained or painted: the color is that of the oak.

The structure is firm, the doors close, and the trays run smoothly on their guides. It leaves the workshop finished: just place it and use it.
