DESCRIPTION

A dining room is remembered for two things: what is served on the table and what adorns the wall. Most people solve the latter with any old piece of furniture, the kind you assemble with an Allen wrench and then forget about.

Not this one. It's a two-piece French side cabinet, hand-carved in walnut in the style of Henry II, the French Renaissance that came back into fashion in bourgeois dining rooms of the late 19th century. They made it to last generations, and it has.

The central panel is the first thing everyone who enters looks at: a hunting scene carved in high relief, with its rider, dog, and palm tree in the background, sculpted stroke by stroke. On the sides, glazed doors with beveled glass in a lattice pattern; below, vegetal scrolls twisted onto the wood. The pediment is topped with two carved birds amidst volutes. That level of carving doesn't come from any factory: it comes from the hands of a cabinetmaker.

It consists of two independent parts, which facilitates its transport and assembly. It measures 200 centimeters high by 140 wide: a piece with presence, designed for a dining room with high ceilings, a spacious living room, or an entryway that wants to make a statement from the door. Above, a glazed display cabinet with shelves for whatever you want to display; below, a cupboard and two drawers for storage.

No two are alike. There will be no replenishment.

── WHAT WE LOVE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The hunting scene on the central panel. It's not just any decorative relief: it has depth, movement, a rider emerging from the wood. Carving this by hand takes weeks, which is why almost no one does it anymore.

→ The stripped walnut. We removed the dark varnishes that covered the wood to restore its natural, warm, and light tone. This way, the carving can truly be seen, shadow by shadow, instead of being drowned under layers of old lacquer.

→ The two sections. More than a century later, the columns still fit, the glazed doors still close, and the drawers still slide. That's what differentiates furniture made to last from furniture made to sell.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

We received it with the varnish aged and darkened by time. We completely stripped it by hand, carefully sanded the wood so as not to damage the edges of the carvings, and treated it against woodworm to ensure the structure for decades to come.

Today, the structure is firm, the doors and drawers work, the beveled glass is intact, and the walnut breathes again in its natural tone. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specialized since 2015 in antique furniture, with its own workshop in Navalcarnero, 30 minutes from Madrid, and over 3,500 families throughout Spain.
