Antique Flame Mahogany Display Cabinet | Louis Philippe Style with Blue Interior

Everyone has things they don't use, but don't want to hide either. Inherited books. Wedding crystal. The dinnerware set that comes out twice a year.

This antique display cabinet was made in the 19th century following the Louis Philippe model, the style that dominated French cabinetmaking between 1830 and 1870: straight lines, no carving, and all decoration entrusted to the wood itself. Ogee cornice, two glass doors, and a continuous base on flattened bun feet.

Flame veneer runs along the cornice, the uprights, and the lower panels of the two doors. It is cut from the same log and book-matched: the pattern of one leaf mirrors the one next to it. This is the resource that replaces carving in this style.

And it retains its original hand-blown glass. This is the glass produced before industrial flat sheets existed: it was blown, opened into a cylinder, and stretched by hand, which is why it never came out perfectly smooth. You recognize it when you move in front of the cabinet, because what is behind the glass ripples slightly. It is not a defect. It is the first thing that is changed when a piece of furniture is damaged, which is why almost none retain them.

Inside, blue. Four shelves on racks and a back made of vertical boards. The blue shows its wear, and the wood peeks through at the edges and grain. Against the washed mahogany, that contrast is half the appeal of the piece.

At the top, where the cornice mounts onto the side, the assembly marks remain visible. No one erased them because no one thought they would ever be looked at.

The wood was washed in our workshop: the dark varnish was removed, leaving the mahogany in its natural tone, matte and with an open pore. The piece is period, the light tone is ours.

127 cm wide, 45 cm deep, and 210 cm high. With a depth of 45 centimeters, it can lean against any wall without obstructing the walkway, and the 210 cm height calls for a high ceiling or a wall free of molding. Five loading heights for books, glassware, or ceramics.

WHY THIS PIECE AND NOT ANOTHER

→ The hand-blown glass. All four panels are original, with their waves and slight distortion. Modern glass is flat and noticeable: it returns a straight reflection. These do not. If you doubt the age of a display cabinet, this is the first place to look.

→ The book-matched veneer. Two leaves cut from the same log and mounted facing each other, so that the flame of one is the reflection of the other. You can see it in the lower panels of the doors: the front has a pattern without having a single relief.

→ The blue interior. It is not a neutral background. A white plate, a leather spine, or transparent crystal changes completely against that blue, and that is the difference between storing and displaying.

→ The adjustable shelves. All four rest on racks and can be repositioned at whatever height is needed: tall books at the bottom, glasses at the top. The furniture adjusts to what is put in it, not the other way around.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

The entire structure was checked: the plumb of the case, the attachment of the cornice to the sides, the seat of the base, and the backboards, which were reinforced where necessary. Both doors were adjusted on their hinges, and the four hand-blown glass panes were checked in their beads: they are intact, and none have been replaced.

The piece received anti-woodworm treatment and is free of pests.

The finish is ours and declared: the wood was washed and sanded by hand until it reached its natural tone, matte and without varnish. The flame veneer, the glass, and the hardware are original. The blue of the interior retains its wear, without being repainted. Both doors open and close without force, and the four shelves sit firmly. It leaves the workshop finished: just place it and use it.
