Pair of Antique Carved Armchairs with Original Petit Point | Napoleon III

A living room is arranged with what's on the sides. Two identical chairs, one on each side of a table or fireplace, resolve the symmetry that a sofa alone cannot achieve.

This pair of antique armchairs was made in France in the second half of the 19th century, during the height of Napoleon III, following the Louis XV medallion model: oval backrest, open arms, and curved legs. They come from an old hotel in the south of France, where they worked together, and from there they went to an antique dealer before arriving at the workshop.

The wood is carved throughout the structure: a rose crest at the top of the medallion, floral garlands on the skirt and at the base of the legs, with gilded reliefs on the walnut tone of the varnish.

The upholstery is original. Hand-embroidered petit point on canvas, with a bouquet of flowers on each backrest and another on each seat, in blues, yellows, and pinks dulled by time. It is tacked to the frame with brass tacks and rests on its spring seat, also original.

The front legs end in original casters, to move the armchair closer to the table or fire without lifting it.

62 cm wide, 57 cm deep, and 102 cm high each, with the seat at 47 cm. This size allows them to fit on both sides of a fireplace, flanking a console in a hallway, or at the foot of a bed. And they work equally well separated: one in the bedroom, another in the living room.

WHAT TO LOOK AT CLOSELY

→ The pair. Both armchairs came from the same workshop and have passed through the same hotel together. Finding one is easy. Finding both, with the same upholstery and the same wear, almost never happens.

→ The petit point. Each stitch was hand-embroidered, and the bouquet on the backrest does not repeat the one on the seat. Such upholstery is usually replaced with new fabric. Here it has been preserved, with the corresponding stains and wear.

→ The gilded carving. Roses on the crest, garlands on the skirt, and a small bouquet on the knee of each front leg. The gilding has worn on the edges, revealing the reddish background of the preparation.

The structure of both armchairs was checked: the fitting of the arms, the medallion seat on the uprights, and the stability of all four legs of each, reinforced where necessary. The gilding was consolidated at points where it was lifting, and the wood was cleaned by hand, without renewing the varnish.

The varnish retains its imperfections and they are left visible: they are from years of use and we like them that way. The petit point upholstery and the spring seat are original; the fabric has some stains that have not been removed, because the remedy was worse than the stain. There is no trace of woodworm. Those who prefer new fabric can request a reupholstery quote before purchase. They are ready to move into your home.
