French Walnut and Red Marble Bedside Table | Louis XV Style

A bedside table is chosen last and seen first. It's what's within arm's reach when the light goes out.

This French walnut bedside table was made in the early 20th century in the Louis XV style: a square body, one drawer, one door, and four cabriole legs with acanthus leaves carved at the knee. It came from a French brocante and then to the workshop.

The top is red marble, with white spots that open up the background like clouds, molded at the edge and set on a walnut frame. The uprights have a fluted molding that extends down to the leg, and the skirt is curved with a small floral motif carved in the center of the front.

The drawer is dovetailed on the sides, with its openwork brass pull. The door opens on a continuous brass hinge and closes with a small, also brass, knob. Inside, a clean cavity, without a shelf: typical of the washstands of the era.

The black is ours. It was hand-painted in the workshop on the panels, moldings, leg carvings, and the edge of the top, and the walnut was left in its natural tone everywhere else. The piece is vintage. The color is ours.

39 cm wide, 36 cm deep, and 82.5 cm high. It is taller than modern bedside tables: it was made for the high beds of its time. It is the right height next to a bed with a box spring or high base, and it works just as well outside the bedroom: next to a reading armchair, as a pedestal in a hallway, or in a narrow corridor where almost nothing else fits.

WHY THIS PIECE AND NOT ANOTHER

→ The carving of the legs. Acanthus leaves at the knee of each leg, hand-carved from solid wood, with a volute at the foot. Four legs, four carvings, none exactly alike.

→ The marble. Red with white spots, molded at the edge and cut to fit the cabinet. It sits snugly in its walnut frame and retains the marks of a century of use on its surface.

→ The dovetailed drawer. The dovetails are visible on the side when opened. It's the joinery shown in a photo that cannot be faked.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

The structure was checked: the plumb of the four legs, the fit of the drawer in its cavity, and the door on its continuous hinge. The wood was hand-washed on the outside to remove dirt and old wax without dulling the walnut, and the set of panels, moldings, and carvings shown in the photographs were hand-painted black.

The walnut is in its natural, clean tone, and the marble is original, with small marks of use on the surface. The drawer slides and the door closes. It leaves the workshop finished: just place it and use it.
