Hardly anyone has a dining room for ten. Almost everyone has, two or three times a year, ten people at home.

This extendable dining table was made in the mid-20th century following the Louis XV model: a wave-cut apron, a carved scallop shell in the center of the front, and four cabriole legs topped with scrolls. The wood is oak.

The tabletop is what sets it apart from other tables of the same model. It is not a smooth surface: it is parquet. Oak blocks mounted in a checkerboard pattern on the diagonal, each with the grain rotated relative to the next, and a border that frames the whole piece and finishes it at the four corners. That is why two adjacent squares never reflect light the same way.

The two extension leaves are housed under the central tabletop. You pull the edge, the leaf comes out in one piece and rises flush. There are no loose boards to look for in the storage room the day you need them.

The color is from our workshop: hand-painted grayish-blue on the base, distressed at the edges of the apron and on the feet, allowing the wood to show through. The tabletop was sanded by hand and left in its natural tone, without stain. The piece is vintage; the color is ours.

140 cm long, 90 cm deep, and 78 cm high. Open, it reaches 236 cm: 96 centimeters more of tabletop, which is the difference between seating six and seating ten without bringing out another table. There are 67 cm of clearance under the apron, so armchairs fit without rubbing.

THREE DETAILS THAT DEFINE IT

→ The parquet of the tabletop. Each block was cut and fitted by hand into the checkerboard, and the perimeter border closes the pattern at the four corners. It is floor-laying craftsmanship applied to a tabletop, and it is appreciated up close: the joint is felt with the hand before it is seen.

→ The hidden extensions. Two leaves housed under the tabletop, which come out by pulling the edge and stay flush without disassembling anything. From 140 to 236 cm in one gesture, and upon closing the table, it returns to its size without leaving a trace.

→ The cabriole legs. Four, with the same double curve and the same scroll on the foot, cut from solid wood. Each one has its own grain: none repeats the pattern of the next exactly.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

The entire structure was checked: the plumb of the four legs, the fastening of the frame under the tabletop, and the movement of the slides for the two extensions, which were cleaned and adjusted so the leaves slide in and out without force. The parquet was touched up before sanding by hand.

The color is ours and is declared: hand-painted grayish-blue and distressed on edges, moldings, and feet. The tabletop was left in natural oak, sanded and unstained. The oak, the parquet, the carving of the apron, and the extension mechanism are original, with the signs of use that correspond to them. The table stands level and the two leaves slide smoothly. It arrives ready to take its place.
