DESCRIPTION

Louis XV-style three-drawer commode, ca. 1940–1960. Acquired from an antique dealer in France; previous provenance undocumented.

It follows the French model: curved front and sides, three drawers, cabriole legs, and a marble top cut to follow the line of the front. This is a workshop-made piece, not 18th-century, and is declared as such.

The entire surface is veneered in herringbone rosewood, with the grain mirrored on each side of the joint. In the center of each drawer is a floral marquetry reserve in light woods: stems, leaves, and flowers inlaid piece by piece onto the background.

The bronze mounts are those required by the model: double-handle pulls with acanthus leaves, shaped escutcheons, corner chutes on the front, a central motif on the apron, and sabots on all four legs.

Interior in oak. The three drawers feature exposed dovetail joints on the sides, and the back is paneled, also in oak, with a frame surrounding two boards.

THE REASON TO LOOK AT IT

The marble is not a replacement top. It is cut to the same curve as the front, molded at the edge, and retains the pencil notation from the workshop that cut it for this frame on the underside. In a commode of this age, the marble is usually the first thing to break and be replaced by any standard straight slab. This one has been with the piece from the beginning.

The marquetry has small signs of wear in some spots on the veneer. They are visible up close and have not been disguised: sanding a one-millimeter marquetry is the quickest way to destroy it.

PERIOD / WORKSHOP

Period: oak structure and drawers, rosewood veneer, marquetry, bronzes, and marble top. All in their original tone.

Workshop: structural inspection, drawer adjustment, bronze fixing, cleaning, and hand-waxing. No dyes, no color applied.

INTERVENTION AND CONSERVATION — NAVALCARNERO WORKSHOP, MADRID

The entire structure was checked: alignment of the four legs, fixing of the paneled back, and seating of the marble on the frame. The three drawers were adjusted on their guides. Each bronze was cleaned and secured in place. The marquetry was cleaned and hand-waxed, without sanding.

No workshop color was applied. The signs of use on the veneer are preserved and declared. The three locks retain their keys and are functional.

USE AND SCALE

120 × 49 × 82 cm. At 82 cm high, the top is at console height: it works in a foyer under a mirror, at the foot of a bed, or in a living room as a wall piece.

The marble handles weight and heat without issue. It is porous stone: a forgotten glass of wine will leave a ring. A coaster is sufficient.

What we know about this piece

El Luis XV nunca dejó de fabricarse en Francia. A mediados del siglo XX los talleres de ebanistería seguían haciendo la cómoda de frente curvo, chapa en espiga y bronces, y esta es una de ellas: ca. 1940–1960, no siglo XVIII. Se compró a un anticuario francés; la procedencia anterior no está documentada. Palo de rosa con marquetería floral, roble por dentro. El mármol conserva por debajo la anotación a lápiz del taller que lo cortó para esta caja. Aquí se limpió y se enceró a mano. La marquetería no se lijó.
