DESCRIPTION

There's one wall in every home that's seen before any other. The one that welcomes. The one that decides, in two seconds and without saying a word, what kind of home this is.

This antique Louis XV style console was built at the end of the 19th century, when such a piece of furniture was still conceived through carving, not molding. Someone drew the rocaille, someone hollowed it out with a gouge, and someone then fitted the white marble top.

The openwork apron, the central volute with the open rose, the garlands flowing down the cabriole legs, and the X-shaped stretcher topped with its carved bouquet. The marble follows the undulating profile of the top, edge to edge, without a single straight line. No current factory produces this: an openwork rocaille is either made by hand or not at all.

125 cm wide, 62 cm deep, and 87.5 cm high. It fits into an entryway without overwhelming it, stands alone beautifully in a long hallway, and works just as well under a large mirror or behind a freestanding sofa.

No two are alike. There will be no restocking.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The central rocaille. It's not an applied relief: it's openwork, pierced from side to side, with the open flower in the center and the acanthus unfolding to the sides. With side light, the shadow defines the work better than any photo.

→ The white marble with faint gray veins, cut to follow the undulating line of the top and with corners softened by use. Cool, matte, with the small marks that only time provides and that no workshop can replicate.

→ The color. Pale blue and cream applied by hand to the carving, with a distressed finish that reveals the wood on the sharp edges. A piece of this ornamental richness, in this tone, ceases to be ornate and becomes luminous.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

It arrived with a sound structure and worn finish. We removed the marble, inspected the joints of the four cabriole legs and the stretcher, and reinforced the points where the openwork carving had weakened. We treated all the wood against xylophagous insects and sanded it by hand, respecting the depth of each volute. Then came the color: pale blue and cream applied by hand, layer upon layer, and a final distressed finish that leaves the relief clean.

Today the structure is firm, the four legs rest without wobbling, and the marble sits flat. The finish is sealed and allows for daily use. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specializing in antique furniture since 2015, with our own workshop in Navalcarnero and over 3,500 families served across Spain.

Preguntas frecuentes
