A century ago, boat furniture solved a problem that every home has today: narrow passages, nothing that can protrude, everything well secured.

The solutions it found are still there, in plain sight.

This boat chest was made in the mid-20th century in a single body, with the solution that marine furniture applied to everything: brass corner pieces and handles that do not protrude from the plane of the drawer.

Pommelé mahogany veneer on all visible faces, including the sides.

The six handles are embedded in their brass cups, flush with the front. The handle lifts with a finger and falls back on its own.

Each corner has its corner piece, and the vertical edges have brass plates at the height of each drawer. The brass is unpolished: it retains the marks of use and the dark tone it has acquired.

When a drawer is opened, the dovetail joint appears on the side, cut and fitted one by one. The three large drawers retain their locks.

100 cm wide, 36 cm deep, and 95 cm high. The depth is the deciding measurement: at 36 cm, it fits in a hallway or an entrance where an ordinary chest of drawers would already impede passage.

In a bedroom under a mirror, in an entryway, or in a living room against a long wall.

WHAT IS NOT MADE TODAY

→ The recessed handles. Each handle is housed in its brass cup and is flush with the front. Nothing to catch a sleeve when passing, which is exactly what they were invented for.

→ The dovetail joints of the drawers. They are visible on the side as soon as they are opened: each tail cut and fitted into its slot. It is the joint that withstands the repeated pull of a loaded drawer.

→ The unpolished brass. The corner pieces retain their wear and dark tone. Polishing them to a mirror finish would have erased in an afternoon what took decades to form.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

The structure of the body and the seating of the plinth, where these chests of drawers show wear from moving, were checked. The six drawers were adjusted to slide without forcing, and the three locks were checked.

The hardware was cleaned without polishing: corner pieces, edge plates, and the six handle cups were cleaned, retaining their existing tone.

The finish was cleaned and restored without reducing the patina of the veneer. The structure is firm, the drawers close level with the front, and all handles fold down.
