DESCRIPTION

There are rooms that are furnished and rooms that are composed. The difference is almost never in the budget. It's in a single piece chosen with discernment.

This antique Louis XV style chest of drawers was built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when workshops still operated in the 18th-century manner: a curved body, rosewood veneer, and hand-cut marquetry, grain by grain.

The top is made of black marble veined with white, profiled to follow the curve of the body. The front and sides display a medallion of birds among branches on a diamond-shaped trellis in light woods. The gilded bronzes—rocaille pulls, corner mounts, and sabots—finish each curve. No current factory produces this fretsaw marquetry: the proportions of a Louis XV are not replicated in series.

With a width of 104 cm, a depth of 48.5 cm, and a height of 81 cm, it presides over an entryway, supports a mirror in the living room, or governs a bedroom without asking permission.

No two are alike. There will be no restock.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The bird marquetry on the front and sides: each bird is hand-cut from different tones of wood and inlaid into the veneer. This is the type of work found today only in antique pieces.

→ The fine natural cracks in the veneer on the sides: the wood has been moving with the seasons for over a century. That patina is not manufactured. It is only waited for.

→ The contrast of the black marble with the honey tone of the rosewood: it provides immediate presence and blends equally well with a classic or a contemporary floor.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

We reviewed the entire structure, adjusted the smooth sliding of both drawers, and consolidated the veneer on the sides, where the piece retains slight marks from previous restorations. The wood was treated against wood-boring insects, and we cleaned the bronzes and marble while respecting their patina.

The chest of drawers is solid, the drawers open smoothly, and the overall condition is very good, with the typical signs of use for its age. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specialists since 2015 in antique furniture, with our own workshop in Navalcarnero and over 3,500 families throughout Spain.

Preguntas frecuentes
