DESCRIPTION

A bedroom can be furnished in an afternoon. But there are presences that are not bought in series: they are waited for, found, and remain for a generation.

This antique burr walnut wardrobe was built in France in the mid-19th century, in the heart of the Louis Philippe period. This was the era when French cabinetmakers mastered burr veneer like no one else: they chose the most figured cut of the tree and book-matched it so that the two doors reflected each other like a mirror.

That symmetry is seen here intact. Grains, swirls, and knots that no current factory can replicate, because no two cuts of burr walnut are the same. The molded panels with cut corners, the projecting cornice, and the turned legs complete a textbook example of the style. And a detail that almost never survives: it retains its original working lock with a period key.

Measuring 144 cm wide and 223 cm high, it is a wardrobe of generous proportions without being heavy. In a master bedroom, it organizes without dominating; in a dressing room or a spacious hall, it becomes the focal point of the room. The interior offers a top shelf, a hanging rail, and an integrated bottom drawer in the plinth.

No two are alike. There will be no replenishment.

── WHAT WE LOVE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The book-matched burr walnut veneer: the two doors originate from the same cut and reflect each other. It is the most demanding veneering technique of the 19th century — one mistake and the entire sheet was discarded.

→ The original lock with its period key, functional after more than a century and a half. The small gesture of turning a 19th-century key every morning cannot be manufactured by any modern workshop.

→ The hidden drawer in the plinth, with hand-cut dovetails. An extra storage space that goes unnoticed and reveals the constructive honesty of the piece.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

The piece has been thoroughly structurally reviewed: carcass, doors, drawer, and back. It has been treated against woodworm, hinges and lock have been adjusted, and the surface has been cleaned and nourished by hand, respecting the patina that the walnut has acquired over time.

The structure is firm, the doors close with their original key, and the drawer slides smoothly. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specialized since 2015 in antique furniture, with its own workshop in Navalcarnero and more than 3,500 families throughout Spain.

Preguntas frecuentes
