DESCRIPTION

There are pieces of furniture that merely take up space. An antique secretaire desk does the opposite: it organizes it. Close the front, and everything that matters is kept inside, in silence.

This drop-front secretaire was built in the second half of the 19th century in the Louis Philippe style: serene lines, a molded cornice with a hidden drawer, and cherry wood fronts with the grain arranged in a mirror image. A piece of furniture designed for writing, storage, and longevity.

The front drops down onto two openwork brass stays, revealing a leather writing mat and a compartmentalized interior with small drawers. The drawers are assembled with hand-cut dovetail joints—no current factory assembles them this way—and all the locks retain their keys and are functional.

With a width of 97 cm and a depth of only 39 cm, it fits where a conventional desk would not: a living room corner, a bedroom, a spacious hallway. When open, it's a complete desk. When closed, it's a piece of furniture with a discreet presence.

No two are alike. There will be no restocking.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The hand-cut dovetail joints in each drawer: the assembly that reveals a 19th-century workshop and that no mass-produced furniture can imitate.

→ The cherry wood grain arranged in a book-matched pattern on the drop-front, with the patina of over a century of use. This color is not applied; only time gives it.

→ Its 39 cm depth. A complete desk when open, a contained piece of furniture when closed. Few pieces solve so much in so little space.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

We have reviewed the entire structure, adjusted the drop-front and its brass stays, and checked the operation of each lock with its key. The wood has received treatment against woodworms and a deep cleaning and nourishment that restores the warm tone of the cherry wood.

The piece is solid and stable and retains the marks of use appropriate for its age, which we have respected. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specializing in antique furniture since 2015, with its own workshop in Navalcarnero and over 3,500 families served throughout Spain.
