The center of a room is what is most looked at and the hardest to get right. An empty space cools a room; a poorly resolved one makes it messy. Few pieces know how to occupy it without asking permission.

This marquetry coffee table was made in the 1950s following the Napoleon III taste, the style that took decorative cabinetmaking to its most ornamental point. It came from a workshop that worked wood with the patience of another era, when a piece of furniture was conceived as an exhibition piece.

The top is a floral marquetry panel on a dark background, protected under glass, with scroll, cornucopia, and bouquet borders resolved piece by piece in woods of different tones. A gallery of turned balusters runs around the perimeter, bronze musical trophies cap the chamfered corners, and the fluted legs end in bronze feet. This marquetry, hand-assembled lamina by lamina, is not mass-produced: every grain and every miter belongs only to this piece.

It measures 100 cm wide, 50 cm deep, and 60 cm high: the proportion of a spacious coffee table, but also a low console if placed against a wall. It works between two sofas, behind a settee, or in an entryway that wants to start with character. The lower shelf, also marquetry, adds surface area without sacrificing lightness.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The marquetry top under glass. The central floral motif within an oval cartouche, surrounded by scrolls and cornucopias, is resolved by inlaying woods of different colors, without a single brushstroke. The glass protects it without hiding it, which is why it remains clear.

→ The walnut patina and the settled sheen of the varnish. Seventy years give wood a depth of tone that a new finish imitates but cannot achieve. Here, time works in favor of the piece.

→ Its double life. The same piece is a coffee table in a living room and a console in an entryway, depending on where you place it. Rarely does a single purchase resolve two spaces.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

The intervention focused on the structure and the elements that use loosens over the years. We reinforced the joints of the legs and the lower shelf, checked each of the turned balusters in the gallery, and secured the bronze corner mounts. The marquetry and glass were cleaned and inspected without altering the original finish.

The table is firm, with its marquetry intact under the glass, the bronzes settled, and the varnish restored to its proper sheen. It arrives ready to take its place.
