At the beginning of the 19th century, French furniture became a language: columns, swans, winged victories, bronze on mahogany. One hundred years later, that language was still alive in the workshops that had learned it.

This Empire-style display cabinet was made in the early 20th century, following that model to the letter. Flamed mahogany veneer fronts, two turned dark wood columns flanking the doors, and an oak interior: back, shelves, and inner sides.

The bronzes are the highlight. In the center of the frieze, two swans face a cup with palmettes, linked by scrollwork with rosettes. At each end, a winged figure with a trumpet. The columns start and end in chiseled bronze with a Greek key pattern, and the two keyholes repeat the palm leaf motif. The key, with its pierced crown-shaped ring, is present and turns.

The doors have glass in the upper two-thirds and a flamed mahogany panel in the lower part, with the grain opened in a mirror image from one leaf to the other. Two turned feet in front, straight in back: the furniture is meant to be viewed from the front.

131 cm wide, 50.5 cm deep, and 180 cm high. Inside, three levels on two shelves. At 180 cm high, it fits under any standard ceiling and leaves space above. In a living room as a wall piece, in a dining room for tableware that deserves to be seen, or in an office as a closed bookcase. It is shipped assembled.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE

→ The swans. It is the emblem of Josephine de Beauharnais and the most recognizable motif in the Empire repertoire. Here they are in bronze, with chiseled plumage and intact relief, not a flat stamped applique.

→ The contrast between the exterior and the interior. Outside, flamed and dark mahogany; inside, light and smooth oak. When the doors are opened, the furniture changes tone, and what is displayed does not compete with the background.

→ The full columns. They run from the capital to the base without interruption, with both bronze finials. In many display cases of this style, they were replaced by applied half-columns; these are solid.

→ The door veneer. The flamed grain has been arranged so that the pattern of one leaf matches that of the other. The veneer is chosen, cut, and fitted: it is not just another board.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

The entire structure was reviewed, with special attention to the anchoring of the columns and the seating of the two turned feet, which is where these display cases show wear from relocation. The two doors were adjusted until they close perfectly, and the lock with its key was checked. The varnish was cleaned and reapplied without reducing the mahogany's patina, and the bronzes were touched up without thorough polishing: their golden tone is original.

The structure is firm, the doors close, and the glass panes are intact. The shelves rest level, and the oak interior was left in exposed wood. Ready to be placed where it belongs.
