DESCRIPTION

In a closed cabinet, good china waits for a meal that almost never comes. Storing and displaying are not the same.

This stripped vintage display cabinet was made in the second half of the 20th century, following the French Provencal model: a curved pediment, glazed arched doors, and also glass sides. It was made when pediments were still carved rather than molded.

The pediment is topped with two carved relief corbels (open flowers on leaves), with a punched background to ensure the carving retains its own shadow. The door crossbars describe an S-curve: each piece was cut separately to follow that line.

Visible brass hardware: long hinges on the edges, two pierced keyholes, and a lock with its key. Inside, the back is a frieze of vertical slats, in the same off-white, and three glass shelves with wooden profiles in that same tone. Four display heights.

124 cm wide, 64 cm deep, and 210 cm high. The width is that of the cornice: the main body measures 107 × 57. The wall space is calculated at about 124; a door opening at about 107. At 210 cm high, it needs a ceiling of 2.30 m to breathe. In a spacious living room, dining room, or at the end of a long hallway, it organizes the entire wall.

Unique piece. Once sold, it will not return.

WHAT ISN'T MADE TODAY

→ The background of the carving, punched stroke by stroke to give the relief its own shadow. This is what separates a carving from a mold, and the first thing to disappear when someone machine-sands it.

→ The glass on the sides. Most display cabinets of this height have blind sides: here, light passes through the furniture from side to side, and 210 cm high does not close off the room.

→ The S-curve of the crossbars, cut bar by bar. This is the line that reveals its Provencal origin.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

The entire structure was checked, and the two doors were adjusted, which, in a piece of furniture of this height, tend to sag under the weight of the glass itself. The hinges were checked, the lock with its key was verified, and it was hand-sanded, taking care of the punched background of the carving: mechanical sanding rounds and dulls it in two passes.

The color is ours, and we say it clearly. Off-white outside and inside, hand-painted and then distressed on edges, pediment, and plinth until the wood is exposed. It is not a patina of use: it is a workshop distressed finish. The structure is firm, the doors close perfectly, and the finish is sealed.

Frequently asked questions

Is it an original display cabinet or a contemporary reproduction?

It is a genuine piece from the second half of the 20th century, manufactured following the French Provencal model. This is evident in the carving of the pediment, a relief with a stippled background made with a punch, blow by blow, not a molded application, and in the S-curved crossbars, cut piece by piece. The brass hinges are visibly screwed on, as they were assembled back then.

What restoration work has been carried out?

The structure was inspected, the two doors were adjusted, and the hinges and lock were serviced, which works with its key. It was hand-sanded so as not to flatten the stippled background of the carving. Afterwards, the color was applied: off-white on the outside and inside, hand-painted and distressed on edges, pediment, and plinth. The color is not the original color of the piece; it is our work. The work was carried out in our specialized workshop in Navalcarnero.

Where does this display cabinet look best in the house?

It measures 124 cm wide by 64 cm deep and 210 cm high, and it needs a ceiling of 2.30 meters so it doesn't feel cramped. In a large living room, it works as a unique wall piece; in a dining room, for tableware and glassware; at the end of a long hallway, as a finishing touch. To calculate passage through a door, consider the central body: 107 cm wide by 57 cm deep.

How is shipping handled for a piece of this size?

Shipping is free throughout the Iberian Peninsula. Delivery is carried out by the store's own staff: we place the display cabinet inside the home, where access allows, and remove the packaging. We do not deliver curbside.
