DESCRIPTION

There are corners in houses that are inevitably left empty — a corner that is too narrow, too angular, too exposed. And then there are pieces that were designed exactly to solve these problems.

This corner display cabinet was made at the beginning of the 20th century in Edwardian style, the English period that revived the 18th-century forms of Sheraton and Hepplewhite with a quality of cabinetmaking that is no longer seen. The mahogany is polished to reveal the grain, the festoon marquetry is inlaid in holly, and the broken pediment crowned by volutes tops the upper body, just like English furniture from two hundred years ago.

The upper body is a display cabinet with a glazed door featuring X- and rhomboid-patterned astragal muntins — the classic Sheraton pattern, cut in fine mahogany moldings over the original glass. Inside, shelves with cream silk upholstered interior to display porcelain, silver, or anything worth seeing. Below, a cupboard door with oval medallion marquetry, a neoclassical urn, and ribbon-tied garlands. Ebonized details on the cornice and plinth. Every inch is thoughtfully designed.

The supporting sides each measure 52 cm, and the height reaches 210 cm. The perfect measurements to adorn the corner of a classic living room, preside over the angle of a dining room, or solve the corner of a library. It is delivered disassembled in two packages — upper and lower body — and assembled at home.

No two are alike. There will be no replenishment.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The festoon marquetry with bows in holly on the frieze of both bodies. It is a Robert Adam motif that English cabinetmaking repeated for over a century, requiring tiny bellflowers to be cut and fitted by hand, one by one. No industrial technique can reproduce this level of detail.

→ The glazed door with X- and rhomboid-patterned astragal muntins. Each mahogany molding is miter-cut and fitted over the original glass — a glass thickness that modern sheets cannot achieve. The transparency slightly distorts, as it should.

→ The oval medallion on the lower door with urn and garland marquetry. The neoclassical urn in the center, the ribbons holding it, the hanging bows — it is the decorative language of Adam and Sheraton applied to a single door. The piece condenses two centuries of English tradition into little more than two meters in height.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

In our workshop in Navalcarnero, thirty minutes from Madrid, we reviewed the entire structure of both bodies. We cleaned the mahogany to restore its original depth of tone, repaired the marquetry without replacing pieces, and preserved the original hardware and glass. The interior was kept with its cream silk upholstery.

The glazed door closes smoothly, the cupboard door opens without play, and the shelves are firm. The structure is stable, and the pediment remains intact. It arrives ready to take its place.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specializing in antique furniture since 2015, with its own workshop in Navalcarnero and more than 3,500 families served throughout Spain.

Preguntas frecuentes
