DESCRIPTION

The cane lets the light through. Six solid backrests enclose a dining room; six cane ones let you see what is behind them.

These six vintage cane chairs were made in France in the 1970s, based on the Napoleon III balloon-back model: an oval that narrows before the seat, with curved front legs and saber back legs. These are 20th-century chairs that follow that model, not 19th-century pieces. They came from an antique dealer.

The backrest is framed by a rounded molding that descends along two uprights with carved fluting. On each front leg, a carved leaf marks the knee. Between the two, the seat apron forms a curve.

The wood is hand-painted in matte black. The cane, which is new, is also black: wood and weave are read as a single entity.

Each chair measures 48 cm wide, 44 cm deep, and 95 cm high, and weighs 5 kg.

The six of them go well around a rectangular table of about 2 meters or a round one of about 150 cm. Next to a light wood table, the black outlines each silhouette; in a kitchen with a dining area, they are suitable for daily use.

The cane holds up to daily use, not the weight of someone standing on it. To reach a shelf, a ladder is better.

WHAT TO LOOK AT CLOSELY

→ The waist of the backrest. The oval narrows just before the uprights and opens up again. This is the line that gives the balloon-back its name.

→ The leaf on the knee. Carved into each front leg, under the seat. With the matte black, it is not read by color, but by shadow.

→ The black on the cane as well. Wood and weave are in the same tone. Against a light wall, each chair is a silhouette.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

In the workshop, all the wood of the six chairs was hand-painted in matte black using water-based paint. Seats and backrests have new cane.

The shape was not touched: the backrest, carving, and legs are the ones they came with. The black is our own. The structure has been checked, and all six sit firmly. Ready to be placed where they belong.

What we know about this piece

In the mid-19th century, during the France of Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III, the backrest was rounded into a balloon shape: an oval that narrows before the seat, set on curved front legs. In Spain, it was called Elizabethan. France continued to make them in the 20th century. These six are French, from the seventies, and came from an antique dealer. They retain the leaf carving on the "knee" of each front leg. In the workshop, they were hand-painted and fitted with new cane webbing. The shape was not altered. The black is our own.
