Next to a bed, there is never enough space. Between the mattress and the wall, there are usually 35 or 40 centimeters, and that space must accommodate a lamp, a book, and a glass of water.

These vintage bedside tables were made in the 20th century following the French Provençal tradition: an open-body, two-tier design with a cutout gallery on the top shelf and four flat-section cabriole legs, in the style of the Louis XV model. The wood is solid beech, which was used for this type of lightweight furniture because it holds a curve without adding bulk to the piece.

The side profile is what defines the furniture. A continuous concavity descends from the upper shelf to the lower one and continues down the leg without interruption. It is seen from the side, not from the front.

The apron features a scalloped cutout on the front and both sides, and the gallery crowning the top repeats the same pattern on a smaller scale. There are no drawers, doors, or handles: the piece is completely open.

The color is from our workshop: ivory on the exterior and grayish-blue on the interior and shelves, hand-painted and then distressed on the edges and moldings, letting the warm tone of the wood peek through. The pieces are vintage; the color is ours.

37 cm wide, 35 cm deep, and 74.5 cm high, each. With a depth of 35 centimeters, they fit into the narrow gap that usually remains next to the bed, and the 74.5 cm height places the shelf above the mattress: what you leave on top is visible and reachable without fumbling. Outside the bedroom, they work just as well as standalone pieces, on either side of an entryway or flanking a console table.

WHAT TO LOOK AT CLOSELY

→ The pair. They were made to occupy both sides of the same bed and have arrived here together. Finding one is a matter of patience; finding both, with the same side profile and the same height, is what almost never happens.

→ The curved side. The concavity runs along the side from top to bottom and serves as the back for the central space. Two per piece, 4 in total, all cut with the same line.

→ The two-tone interior. The grayish-blue only appears inside: at the back of the open space, on the shelves, and on the inner face of the sides. From the bedroom door, you see two ivory pieces; as you approach, the color appears.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

The structure of both tables was inspected: the stability of the eight legs, the seating of each shelf, and the attachment of the upper gallery. The leg joints were reinforced where necessary, as that is where such a light piece of furniture experiences the most strain. The wood was sanded by hand before painting.

The color is ours and is as follows: ivory on the outside, grayish-blue on the inside, hand-painted and distressed on the edges and moldings. The beech, the apron cutouts, and the gallery are original, with signs of use that the paint does not hide. Both sit level and the four shelves are firm. They are ready to be brought home.
