A dining table is typically filled with identical chairs. And then there are the head chairs: the two seats from which one presides, serves, and converses, facing everyone.

These two vintage armchairs were manufactured in the 20th century following the English Chippendale model, from the same workshop and with the same design as our set of six Chippendale chairs: carved top rail with acanthus leaves, pierced back with a central vase, cabriole legs, and ball-and-claw feet. The difference lies in the arms, and what arms signify at a table.

The finish is from our workshop: hand-painted black and then distressed on edges, carvings, and reliefs, allowing the reddish tone of the base to show through on each acanthus leaf and claw. The arms end in a carved volute and descend on fluted supports to the seat frame. The wavy skirt repeats the carving on the knees of the front legs. Both seats were reupholstered in plain, off-white linen: the pierced back remains the first thing one notices.

Each chair measures 62 cm wide, 55 cm deep, and 102 cm high. With arms, they require a table with a high apron or without a front stretcher, which is why their natural place is at the two ends. They work equally well as standalone pieces: one in an office facing a desk, another in a bedroom or an entryway.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE

→ The volute arms. They were carved in a curve, coil back on themselves at the finial, and rest on a fluted support. This is what distinguishes a dining armchair from a chair with two sticks at the sides.

→ The ball-and-claw feet. On the two front legs of each armchair: the claw gripping the sphere, the gesture that the Chippendale model made standard, and which here features just the right amount of distressing on the claws.

→ The pair, together and matching. Finding a Chippendale armchair is easy. Finding two identical ones, and from the same workshop as a set of six chairs, is what almost never happens. Bought separately, a table and head chairs never quite match.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

Both armchairs were inspected one by one: the stability of the legs, the firmness of the back joints, and the seat of the arms on their supports. They were hand-sanded before painting.

The black is our signature and is proudly declared: hand-painted and then distressed on edges and carvings. Both seats were reupholstered in new, off-white linen here. Both sit perfectly level and can withstand daily use at a table.
