DESCRIPTION

The top of a nightstand fills up by itself: the glass, the book, the glasses, the phone. What almost no furniture solves is where to put what comes next.

This pair of vintage nightstands was made in France in the mid-20th century: a top with rounded edges, a wavy apron, turned legs, and a low shelf between them. One drawer per nightstand and, under the top, a pull-out tray that is extended when needed and stored when not.

The wood is solid beech, hand-washed and sanded in our workshop until raw: open pore, matte finish, without stain or varnish to hide the grain. The drawers are dovetailed, with the joinery visible on the sides, and each brass handle rests on its openwork rosette.

43 cm wide, 39 cm deep, and 50 cm high each. This is a low height, within reach from the mattress of current beds. Together, on either side of the bed; separated, as auxiliary tables next to the sofa, where the tray acts as a table when needed.

WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE

→ The pull-out tray. Each nightstand has its own under the top: pull it out and a second surface appears; push it in and it disappears. It's the detail of French bedroom nightstands that almost never arrives working. These two do work.

→ The dovetail joints. The sides of each drawer are joined piece by piece, with the joint visible when opened. This construction dates the piece.

→ The two of them, together. Same wood, same measurements, same hardware, same apron. They were born in the same workshop and arrive as they left: as a pair.

Both nightstands were reviewed equally: the plumb of the turned legs, the seating of the shelves, and the firmness of the apron. The two drawers and the two pull-out trays were adjusted to slide smoothly.

The washing was done here: stripped and hand-sanded until the beech was raw, with a matte finish that leaves the pore tactile. Both stand plumb. They arrive ready to take their place.
