DESCRIPTION

Nightstands are almost always bought in pairs, but the antique market almost never offers them that way. A single piece is common. Two exactly identical pieces, preserved together for decades, are the exception. That's why many bedrooms have a beautiful nightstand on one side of the bed and a different one on the other side, glaring at each other.

These two Venetian nightstands are the exception. They have been together since they were manufactured, in some Italian workshop in the mid-20th century that reinterpreted 18th-century Venetian Rococo models — one of the most exuberant and recognizable styles in the history of European furniture.

The carcass is polychromed in sky blue distressed finish, with all reliefs highlighted in aged gold leaf. The distressed finish allows glimpses of the gesso background underneath, which gives the piece that patina between sky and dust found only in antiques. The side appliques, the front skirt, the shell-shaped handles, the acanthus leaf scroll feet — all hand-gilded, matte, without industrial glitter shine.

The structure is bombé: no straight planes anywhere on the piece. The front curves outward, the sides too, the top undulates following the body's contour, and the cabriole legs end up drawing a deer-like silhouette, finished with carved acanthus leaf feet. It is pure Rococo decoration — and it is practically impossible to reproduce this shape with current industrial machinery.

Although called nightstands, their volume and height allow for more uses: as a telephone table in a hallway, as an auxiliary table on each side of a sofa, as a vase pedestal in an entryway. Their height (68 cm) and width (64 cm) make them versatile. The single drawer, with a clean interior and revised sliding mechanism, serves for small books, glasses, accessories.

The distressed sky blue combines especially well with pearl gray, sage green, off-white, and dusty pink walls. With bedding in raw linen, pearl gray, or bone white. It works in classic bedrooms but also in eclectic modern interiors where contrast with simpler lines is sought. The styled photo shows it: with an upholstered olive green headboard and white walls with moldings, the nightstands become the main chromatic contrast in the bedroom.

We sell this pair as a single indivisible unit: either you take both, or you take none. That's how we want the nightstands to remain after so many decades: together.

── WHAT WE LIKE MOST ABOUT THIS PIECE ──

→ The bombé shape. No straight planes. The continuous curve on the front, sides, top, and legs. It's a shape that is carved by hand, piece by piece, for weeks. Today it is replaced with pressure-molded MDF.

→ The scrolled acanthus leaf feet. Each foot has its own volute carved in solid wood, hand-gilded. If you stoop down and look closely, they look like small sculptures.

→ The distressed sky blue finish with gold. It is the most characteristic chromatic combination of Venetian Rococo and the most difficult to find. Most Venetian nightstands sold are white with gold or cream with gold. These are sky blue — they are in another visual category.

── RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID ──

In the workshop, we inspected the entire structure, the four cabriole legs, and the carved appliques of each nightstand. We treated the wood against wood-boring insects. The drawers were adjusted to slide smoothly. The polychromy and gilding are original — our work was limited to a very careful cleaning to preserve the distressed finish that gives the piece character.

One pair. Only one unit available.

Once it's gone, there won't be another.

A piece selected and restored by Antique Arte y Decoración — specialists since 2015 in antique furniture, with our own workshop in Navalcarnero, 30 minutes from Madrid, and more than 3,500 families throughout Spain.

Preguntas frecuentes
