There are few domestic furniture pieces with stone tops. They are recognizable from afar: light does not fall on marble the same way it does on wood.

These two nightstands were manufactured in the mid-20th century following the French Louis XV model: bombé body, slender cabriole legs, and a molded marble top. They are a pair and are sold together.

Each top is a piece of ochre and cream veined marble, cut to follow the contour of the body. No two tops have the same pattern: stone does not repeat itself.

The corner uprights feature acanthus leaf brass appliques. Each drawer has an openwork rocaille handle. The feet are finished with brass sabots.

The black is matte and was applied in our workshop, hand-painted. Against this background, the light stone and brass do all the work.

35 cm wide, 28 cm deep, and 75 cm high. Each. The depth is the deciding measurement: at 28 cm, they fit where the bed already takes up almost the entire bedroom. The 75 cm height places the top above the mattress, even on high beds.

Their place is on either side of the bed. They work just as well individually: next to an armchair, holding a lamp and a glass of water without needing a coaster.

WHAT IS NOT MADE TODAY

→ The marble top. Cut and molded to follow the serpentine contour of the body, not a simple rectangle placed on top. The vein of each top is distinct because stone does not allow for copies.

→ The brass appliques. Acanthus leaves on the uprights, openwork rocaille handles, and sabots on the feet. The relief is chiseled and retains its own shadow depending on how the light falls.

→ The proportion. Three drawers and a stone top on legs that take up almost half the height. All the weight is at the top, yet the furniture appears light.

RESTORED IN OUR WORKSHOP IN NAVALCARNERO, MADRID

The structure of both pieces was reviewed, starting with the joint of the legs to the body, which, with a stone top, is the load-bearing connection. The six drawers were adjusted to slide smoothly, and the entire body was hand-sanded before painting. The tops were cleaned without reducing the stone.

The black was applied here, and we state it clearly: hand-painted, in matte, on the body and legs. The brass appliques were touched up without polishing them to a mirror finish. All eight legs are plumb, the six drawers close flush, and the tops sit firmly. They are ready to come home.
